I understand that you can't use color to lift color so putting in a lighter dye will not make your hair lighter it well just probably make it turn orange. You will probably have to use a color fixer which takes all the black out of your here and then you could use a color. Black is a really hard color to get out. I know from experience and this is what i did. I put a color remover and then dyed it light brown which was the only color it would take. Good luck.
If your hair turns orange and you put brown in it it will probably not take it will either turn red or stay orange. Like I said black is hard to take out. I have heard of people putting dawn dishwashing liquid in there hair and this pulls some of the color out. Also prell if you can find it. Maybe even a clarifying shampoo. Note that this will dry your hair out a lot so you have to moisturize and deep condition it really well afterwards. First try getting as much of the black out. Can't order online?
now, i am in no way predijuse (i cannot spell but i am not a biggot) but my friend, the cosmotologist told me that her teacher told the students that "once you go black you can never go back" it is hard to remove but others have done it and you can too if you are patient and do it over a period of time....good luck, i know you will end up ok.
happy coloring

Once you go black you DEF> can go back. LOOK AT MY HAIR! I had dyed black now look at it!!!? It was a long process and very touchy, but I did it... at home with OTC dyes.
If your are brave and not too worried about your hair turning out PERFECTLY, then you can do it.
I lifted my dyed black with bleach... I lifted it to a light brown. Leave it in for about 15 mintues or so... watch your hair in the mirror, it'll turn. Once it gets to a level you like, remove the bleach. I used garnier... its a pretty good bleach. Your hair MAY turn out PATCHY if you lift it any lighter than a brown. If you want it lighter, lift it till it's a orangey color, and then put a light brown dye in....
Hairdressers go to school to learn how to color. If you don't go to them they aren't getting paid so that's why they say, "once you go black, you can't go back." It's a very scary job and YES without a prof. help you could get a really bad dye job, but it can be done.... your hair may be DRY and brittle, but ONLY if you go too light.
Try what I've suggested, if not, go to a salon. I'm from CANDADA and I can't get. Prof. hair dying products either.
