Hey all. I just found this site and it's really informative, but with so many topics and places to go, I haven't found the info I've been looking for, so I would seriously appreciate anything someone can tell me.

I'm half Japanese, half German, as in, asian eyes, somewhat tan, and thick, wavy brown hair. Now, just finding a good color is hard enough, because apparently I can't even touch into my typical black asian heritage (according to many people it would look awful) and I've gone semi with it a couple times with some dark auburns, and recently I went permanent with a auburn slightly lighter than my natural color, and I'm now on a hunt for some fun. I want to try colors, but I can't find anywhere the information I need about the risks of semi over permanent (if any) or say, if I tried some kind of blonde on my darker hair, semi or permanent, or how many times I can die my hair in a short amount of time without killing it.  Is there a site I can check out, or does anybody know if there are any speed bumps? Or can I just jump into it? I'd really appreciate anything. Thanks.

You can't really go semi for blondes....you will have to remove pigment from your hair to get it lighter, and this is not reversible.  You really do have to be careful just jumping into it.  Chemicals are complicated.  At least learn the color wheel, that way you will know that whatever color your hair comes out, you will need the base of the opposite to counter it...I'd recommend reading Claude's sticky at the top of the hair color forum if you really want to get into it.  Since you've dyed your hair permanent auburn, be aware also that color will not lift color.  You can't just go buy a box of blonde and have it come out blonde, especially on previously dyed hair.  You will probably need bleach to lift it to a yellow, then to dye it blonde over that (or tone it).  Like I said, chemicals are complicated.  Always be sure to test strand EVERYTHING, especially since you are new to this.

Dyeing it repeatedly will damage it over time.  It depends a lot how long you want to keep it.  If you like your hair bra strap length or longer, you will need to be somewhat careful how many chemicals you put on it  because doing a lot to it (especially if you go for bleach) will add up over time.  If on the other hand, you keep your hair fairly short, any damage gets cut off eventually so its less of a concern.

Many thanks. I'm thinking maybe to let my hair grow out back to it's natural color before doing something again. I'm still thinking though. I'm a little hesitant to go for the bleach, you know?
