Hi!
I am wondering if it is safe to color over highlighted hair. My hair is a very dark brown and is highlighted with golden caramel at the crown. What will the results be if I use a perm/semi-perm color?

Thanks for any advice!
Lisa

hi lisa. if you`ve had your hair highlited in less than a weeks time,do not color. your hair needs at least a week to recover. i think oyur hair will be fine if you use a perm or semi perm haircolor. semi perm will be less damaging then perm, if you are looking to be as gentle as you possible can. 3 days before the day u plan to color, i would recommend deep conditioning so your hair isnt totally robbed of it moisture. i am assuming you are using an at home coloring, so please do follow the directions on how to use the cinditioner they give you as well. hope this helps you.
love, penny

I just wanted to jump in to say that a friend of mine just used a semi-permanent color over her highlighted hair, and the results DID turn out slightly different on the highlighted portion of her hair compared to the rest. She used a reddish-brown semipermanent color, and the highlighted portion turned out looking a bit redder than the rest (still looked good, but it did not make her hair one color).

I think the way a color turns out depends on the color you have to start with. So to me it just makes sense that if your hair is 2 different shades to start with (highlighted), it may take differently on each of those colors.
