I`ve worn pinch braid extensions for nearly a couple of years, yet the last two times I tried something new -- a hair weave. My hair is cornrowed and then the weave is sewn in.

My questions if you`ve worn a hair weave are this -- how long did you go between tightenings? Did the weave start to pull out near the front of your hair, rather quickly?

It`s been two weeks since I had my current weave put in and it`s in bad shape already. In fact, in less than a week, I noticed it coming loose. On both sides in the front, the weave is nearly an inch from my head. That would be wonderful if my hair had actually grown that fast! But alas, the weave is just pulling out and away from my head. I brush it carefully and take very good care of it, but it`s simply coming out. Also, in many areas on my head, I can feel parts of the weave coming out.

I tried the weave because my stylist was very enthusiastic about it, compared to the pinch braids, but I wonder if my weave is coming out because of the stylist`s technique or if most weaves come loose much quicker than pinch braids.

Thanks for your time!

Jennifer

Hi Jennifer,

I called two friends of mine that are hair extension specialists. Here is the rub, they both had completely opposite opinions. Which I have found is true about all hair people. Everyone has their own opinion of what is best or right.

I would first suggest that you call your stylist and tell them that you are having this problem and ask to have the weave redone...at no charge.

No weave should come out as quickly as you describe. Yes, it is generally true that pinch braids are tighter and last longer but even still, for your weave to be pulling away so fast sounds like something was not done properly.

Even though the two extension experts disagreed, they both felt that your weave experience points to a problem in the application.

Hope that helps.

Best wishes,
Karen

Dear Karen,

What a sweetheart you are for taking the time to call -- I really appreciate it!

>>Here is the rub, they both had completely opposite opinions.

The older I get, the more I realize that there is no one, absolute, definite authority about any subject...

I did call the salon. Interestingly enough, the stylist who put in the weave is no longer at the salon! But the one (and only) senior hair extension specialist agreed to fix the weave at no charge. That`s great news except.....I live four hours away.

I have not given up completely on weaves. But unless I find someone who stands out in his or her field or who is highly recommended, I think I`ll just fall back on my stand-by, which is adequate: pinch braids.

When the weave is first put in, I will have to say that, in my opinion, it flows better and looks more natural. However, although I`m not poor, I`m certainly not rich either! When I get my extensions tightened (or a new set put in), I stay overnight in the city. Thus, the sooner the extensions need maintenance, the more costly it is for me.

I`ll try to hold on another week or two and simply go in for pinch braids. I`ll take in the weaves that I cut out of my hair and let the stylist cut the hair off of the track.

Of course you know what my husband said, "Your hair is below your shoulders. Why don`t you just forget the extensions and wear it naturally?"

After getting used to the luxurious feeling of hair running down my back? I`m a hair hog and would sorely miss all that hair!!

Hey, we all have our vices. Mine is a lot better than several of which I can think......{grin}

Karen, I really do appreciate the time you took to investigate my question. It means a lot!

My best to you,

Jennifer
