HELP! Black Roots w/ hi-lites.....how do I handle

I need some advise from a seasoned pro! The client has Black roots and the rest of the hair is Hi-lited ( calico cat-ish ) How do I treat the roots to blend into the hi-lited hair? Should I pre-lighten w/ bleach? Apply a compatable color to the roots afterwards? And then do foil hi-lites to blend? The hair is coarse and curly.... Any Advise? Confused
