QuoteReplyTopic: thinking about extensions (and new to them) Posted: July 31 2007 at 1:19am
Okay so very soon, I am getting my hair cut shorter (I have a post in 'short hair') I am also getting my hair colored. My hair is slightly damaged. I wanted to be able to dye extensions fun colors rather then damaging my hair even more [and using them more for accent then for thickness or length]. Obviously, I'd like to have human to be able to use flat/curling irons, and be able to dye them. I don't have the money to spend a ton on them though. I was condering getting some off ebay that are in my price range, and I didn't know if this was wise or if it didn't matter? I also read about some girls using african american extensions on caucasion hair and didn't know if the textures would clash. Basically I'm just very confused. I try and try to learn more about what it is I'm really looking for, and how much I'm going to have to spend.
eek i hope i put this in the right topic if i didnt sorry, i'm tired
You have a lot of options. Some of the girls here really know their stuff and can help. Im trying to get a visual on what you want to do exactly. Is it something along these lines? Is that your hair in the avatar?

I think you means wefts/tracks? You can find wefts in many brands, colors and textures that will match your hair. We don't have our own extensions. Believe me if we did they wouldn't stay exclusive long at all
Some ebay vendors are good. I believe many have established businesses and use ebay as cheap advertisement.
You can dye some synthetic hair and use hot irons on them, I don't know if that would be cheaper or not? You can probably find the colors you want and not have to dye it.
Do you have pics of your hair now and how you want it to look? That may help us see what may work best for you.
That’s a cute look on you. The one you want is not very far off from what you have now in my opinion. So the back you want kind of spikey. That’s easy enough. MsHoney what do you think? It looks to me like she may not even need extensions but it would be fun. The front is longer so you could just leave that and bleach it so then you could use crazy colors and all that to get the hot pinks or whatever other colors. I understand though to lift all that black to be light enough to put the colors on might cause breakage. Maybe just a few little micro links or fusion bonds that are longer and almost feather like around the ears in a very pale blond that will take colors easily would do the trick. You can probably get away with synthetics that take color okay. Or just ad them in already the colors you want but I don’t know how often you want to keep changing them so just learn how to install them yourself so you can take them in and out with ease in the different colors.
I'd probably like to be able to change them about every two weeks, if that would be okay with synthetic or just in general. I would consider bleaching and i'm having blonde put in my hair anyway soon but i wasn't planning on going light enough to have to bleach, after stripping. Yes, my style is pretty close to the one i want except for the back. I've been told that I could just dye my hair since i'm not doing a ton of color but it kills me to put that type of stress on it (i fried my hair a few years ago with bleaching). If I were to get synthetic that I could dye, where would I get those from? Every place online I've seen synthetic it's said I cant dye them, which is how I got the impression the only extenions you could dye were human . I would be willing to dye my own hair, but I'd also like to do a coontails, zigzag, just patterns in such with dye and I'd rather not do it on my own hair haha.

Krimsa, I agree. It's such a small section anything would work but I think the less complicated the better.I think you should just go to your local Beauty supply store and get a couple of cheap packs of synthetic hair so you can switch your colors up. You can also check here to see if you can find some small pieces of colored synth wefts http://talk.hairboutique.com//forum_posts.asp?TID=29643 Someone on ebay sells rainbow fusion she could buy that and a cheap fusion iron and switch up often too. I'll find the ebay store in a few.
Yeah simpler the better and since you are not going for drastic changes here like volume or length I think. Cheaper the better also. You could go with human hair as well but it is a little more expense and you shouldnt need to. Also, a friend of mine bleached her under hair white blond from black and it wasnt a very good idea. She basically fried it. Then she tried using the crazy colors and they would sort of stain because the fried blond was now so porous. Like if she did hot pink, it would wash out right away and be just a yucky dull off pink for a long time. You dont want that.
Do the synth in the colors you want so its bright and vibrant.

Those are cool! Ya my friend with the fried hair when she wanted 3100 it would only look like 350 and then take weeks to wash out lol. Luckilly she had that thick beautiful naturally curly hair so it grew out in a few months and the top layer concealed it in the mean time.

r4ch31- ok, can you give us a nickname or something. What about spray on colors, have you ever tried those? You may want to ask for info in the hair color forums too.
Krimsa- Do you have to bleach first with to add most brands of funky colors? I thought I saw something in the BSS that didn't need pre-lightening.
Its been my experience with them as a dark brunette naturally that you can always use them but say you put a bright pink on dark hair, you most likely will only get a hue of the color. It will show up a little more in the sun but that’s it. If you lighten first, the color shows up ten fold and will look more like how it looks there on the site.
Now those sprays on colors are different. I have used just the cheap crap you get in the stores at Halloween ya know those? Those are almost like spray paint and are thick and dense and lay on top of the cuticle so they will show up on any color hair. But they are also sticky and like paint on top. That’s only been my personal experience with them though and that’s all I have used.

Oh wow, thanks a ton. I got my hair color/cut scheduled for the 8th. I'm so excited :)
Yeah, I've tried the spray colors, but they seem cheap and costumy looking imo
and yes, my name is rachel
actually, i'm definatly considering the extensions in the one link but if i wanted to do a larger chunk (width wise) as if i wanted to do a coontail what type of extension would i look for?

Krimsa- we forgot all about clip-ons. Rach with cip-ons you could change your color everyday, all day if you wanted to. You can buy them and just sew them onto the wefts you've bought.
