I had my hair highlighted today, I have been going to the same girl for 11 years. I dont know what is wrong, but the last couple of times I can not tell that she did a thing. My roots are not pronounced as they were, but there is no "highlight" just a dull blonde. She is over 45 min from my house and I have to take off work to go b/c she is only there T-F until 5, so it is not easy to just go back.
I mentioned to her the last time that I had been disappointed and she said my hair was getting darker since I am getting older(34) and that years of dye have caused my hair to be all one color so we can try lowlight/highlight. First of all is this true?
Second what can I use to put light blonde highlights around my face, just really a few streaks so it looks sun kissed(what she should have done). My natual hair color is strawberry blonde so I have always been scared to do it on my own b/c I am afraid of an orange experience.
When I was 19-23 I used frost kits and had white hair, but it was not orange, is this what I should use again for streaks?
I just dont want orange!!!

I was just doing a search, and happen to read your post. I am not a color professional....but I just had to comment on what your stylist said to you. My first concern is that you have paid $150 to get your highlights done and had commented to her, your disappointment. Yet, obviously nothing changed for this appt, and you still had to pay $150? That really bites. Whether or not her info on the age of your hair or years of dyeing is true, I still don't understand. If she had this info, why didn't she work with it to achieve the look you wanted, or have always gotten. Perhaps changing the highlighting formula to 'lift' more, ya know.
I really don't understand when colorists don't explain prior to starting anything, but wait until the end when we 'complain' and then come up with 'why it's that way'. When we ask for what we would like...if it's not possible, or several steps are going to be taken, then how come they can't tell us upfront, prior to all that time and money possibly wasted.
I don't recommend using a frosting kit. I'm thinking, since your hair has already been exposed to highlighting, frosting could break that hair right off now. I don't want you to risk that! About a year ago, I mistakenly grabbed a frosting kit off the store shelf instead of a highlight kit. I was in a rush, and the darn packaging was so similar! I hadn't even highlighted my hair in about 6 weeks. I had only applied the solution no more than 5 minutes, and saw the box said "frosting". I looked at my hair and it was processed already(instead of my usual 15mins) Thankfully I didn't have it but in just a couple areas...but those areas broke off.
If you're just looking for a drugstore kit for a couple areas, I believe I've seen Garnier Color Breaks, that offered a highlight kit for those with lighter reddish hair. I use their kit for blonde highlights. I've also seen one that was for 'cool tone' highlights (opposed to warm tone) but, sorry, I can't remember who makes it.
Hopefully someone with more experience or suggestions can help you out. If you're anxious, and haven't gotten more info, I would try just asking someone that works at Sally's for a suggestion.

Try L'Oreal Cremelights. It's a more gentle bleach-no ammonia. You can foil a few highlights around your face. Do a strand test though to see how long to leave the bleach for the color result that you are trying to achieve. Good luck.
