Thick, wavy hair

   I want to grow my hair medium-long (just below my ears) but it is very thick, I have some graders that thin the hair out like a razor cut but I've been advised against this as the bulk will just return and make it look worse?

The thing is I don't see any other way of keeping the bulk down, should I get it thinned out with scissors, find products that help or give up having longer hair?
