QuoteReplyTopic: What to do about big THICK hair? Posted: August 12 2007 at 12:15pm
Hello,
Well I've wanted to grow my hair long for some time, and began doing so.. the problem is my hair is incredibly thick (don't under-estimate the word THICK), bushy, dry and curls.
I've tryed Toni & Guy and Babyliss hair straighters, whilst both do straighten my hair (after a huge amount of effort) its still huge and thick, and generally just looks stupid, it also makes me look far younger then when Its short, I want my hair to look regular and be able to grow it long and just have it fall normally, can anyone recommend products, techniques or probably best, hair cuts to straighten/normalise INCREDIBLY thick hair?, I'm male by the way.
I've thought about thinning it out, but the problem I see is if I thin it out then let it grow, once my hairs 2 inches longer, i'll have 2 inches of short thick hairs where it was thinned out, meaning i would look like an afro with thin ends :-/
Here's some pictures to show you how bushy it is:
I saw this post: http://talk.hairboutique.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=55342 I'd love to have my hair like the first pic, is it possible?
I know nothing about haircare, so any help is appreciated.
Why do you have to fight for a texture? Doing that is SO much work. If you don't mind all the work it would be for the upkeep, go to a salon and let them chemically straighten your hair (if you don't want it that long, just like the guy in that picture), your roots will grow out curly, so you'll need to have them redone every once in awhile. Don't try straightening it chemically yourself at home, that is risky.
Your thick hair will look great long, if you want it to be very long, you should just leave the texture the way it is instead of damaging it with heat or chemicals, and the longer you grow it the better it will look. (The thinning thing really wouldn't be for now I don't think, that would be for once it hit longer than your shoulders, then you can get the ends so they taper instead of being cut straight across.)

Hi Susan, thanks for he recommendations, I just blew £90 on GHD straighteners as I hear they are the best, it really just doesn't fix my problem atall.... Leaving my quite annoyed seeing as I'm not made of money... oh well, perhaps I'll ebay em.
After so many unsuccessful straightening attempts, I think I should just put that to rest, I thought about chemically straightening like you mentioned, but I think it may be too risky, seeing as my hair looks awful when its straightened, so if it were chemically straightened and looked the same, i'd be screwed.
Perhaps you're righ, once my hairs longer it may be more under control, especially if i cut it so the hair on top is longer then the hair at the bottom, at the moment its all the same length, have you got any other ideas for styles that would suit me at the moment?, i'll have a google around, maybe I should cut the sides/back shorter? so that it grows at a better ratio.
If you cut the back and sides short, and keep longer hair on top, I always thought that style looked good...I have a friend who wears his curly hair that way. I should tell you we are in our 30s though and don't necessarily know what's in style for younger people! You can try to see how it will look before you do it (and if you will like it) by slicking the hair on the sides and back down (with water if that'll do it, or with gel if it won't - not to wear out, just so you can see).
