I have black, straight, waist length hair.
It is thick from the back but thin at the top and the hairline is thinning also.
I want to trim it 3inch and then layer it.
My mother won`t let me keep it short and this is the only real way i can have a simple style without spending too much time on my hair and without having it be short when i tie it up in a ponytail.
I will tell the hairdresser i want a trim and layers starting at my jawline and getting longer in steps.
Does this sound like a good description? Will it make my hair look different? Will it make it look unhealthy? Is there a specific name of this type of layer? Do you have any other suggestions and any hairsites i can visit with long layered hair? Also, should i wash my hair before I go or have it cut dry? Is there anything else I need to tell the hairdresser? or know? Thank You

Hi! If you tell the stylist you want long layers starting at your jaw he/she should understand. You might want to specify how long each layer should be. Also, if you like to put your hair in braid(s) you might mention this, since that can be a lot harder with hair that isn`t all one length.
Layers tend to add body to hair, so yes, it will make your hair look and fall differently. The shorter layers will fall in front of your shoulders more easily than the longer ones, which will probably stay behind. So your hair will probably look significantly shorter from the front when you`re walking around, just doing your normal thing. I hope that makes sense.
If your hair is healthy now, it will probably still look that way after the cut, as long as you keep it trimmed and conditioned. As for washing your hair before hitting the salon, most stylists will wash your hair anyway since they usually cut wet. You could call the salon ahead of time to find out. Good luck with your cut--let us know how it turns out! :-)
