QuoteReplyTopic: Photo Of Brigid's Fallen Strands w/ Update Posted: September 18 2007 at 1:08pm
Over the recent weekend Brigid lost 10 strands.
She brought them into the office this morning and I shot a photo of them.
Billy went to Sallys this morning and bought some Keratin sticks and a heater and he is melting the keratin and will attempt to re-attach the fallen strands.
I hope the photos below shows enough of the strands.
Based on all the excellent input from everyone here Billy, Brigid and I have come to the conclusion that the strands fell for the following reasons:
1. The pre-tipped tops were did not have enough Keratin on them. In a few cases Billy did snip a few tops if there was excessive Keratin but the strands that fell he did not snip. If you look at them you can see that they are pretty thin.
2. The fusion tool was not hot enough? The jury is still out on this. I think he is considering following up behind the fusion tool with a flat iron on the attachment point. Not sure if this is good or not. Right now Brigid and Billy are in the HB "salon" where we do all our hair work melting the Keratin sticks and re-applying the fallen strands.
3. Brigid's hair is too fine and slippery to hold fusion well. We definitely talked about doing beads/interlocking rings or similar for her next install.
4. The strands were too heavy? Not sure. Each strands was measured and weighed about .2 ounces. So its possible but is that a lot of weight?
5. Her aftercare needs to be improved. I did send her all of your great tips for aftercare and conditioning. Thank you so much.
6. Other factors?
Any feedback is great appreciated. I also took photos of her today and will post them when I can get them fixed up.

Poor little fallen soldiers. They were brave and tried their best. We'll need a close up of the bonded ends.
*I wouldn't use a flat iron, that'll just spread the glue and flatten the bond.
*I don't think her hairs to slippery, the keratin bonds the two hairs well.
* Conditioner before installation reportedly causes the keratin to release, causing the bond to slip. He may want to clarify the hair where he's reinstalling before doing so if she's conditiioned it.
I prefer the glue gun to the glue pot. To me, the gun produces a harder bond while the pot produces a more ,weaker bond.

Hi Ms. Honey.....
Thank you for all the feedback.
Unfortunately that is the best we could do with the camera. Let me see if we can try again.
I am passing all your great tips to Billy. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Hey Karen, How long did Brigid wait until she washed her hair after the install? I would wait probably two days? Ms. Honey?
If the iron melted the keratin then it was hot enough.
It could be when Billypoo was sculpting the keratin between his fingers he didn't mend it tight enough.
I think you want to use an equal amount of hair as the bond.
There was another individual method that really looked easy to apply. It was a metal ring with a string. You used the string (formed in a loop) to pull your hair through the bead and then crimp the bead. I'll try to find it.

Karen, are those I tips or U tips? Before they were installed, did the tip look like a shoe lace tip or did it look flat and rounded like a finger nail? If it looked like a shoe lace, then yes, you would need more keratin to use these tips for fusion. I read your other post stating that Billy could gently pull some of these tips out, that should not happen. Sounds like perhaps there was not enough keratin to properly melt thru the hair.
Yes, absolutley clarify before install, no conditioner near the roots either.

Should also say, if the photo of that blonde tip is an unused tip, then yes they were sticks. Stick tips are primarily used for ring installs and would need some extra keratin to get a good fusion bond....

I shampooed and conditioned my hair right after I installed them but some say wait at least 24hrs. Some pre-tipped I-tips don't come with enough keratin for a hot fusion and are used primarily with rings, links and shrinkies. Did the company suggest that you use these for hot fusion?

I have been reading through all of the posts on Brigids install (been gone a few days so I am trying to catch up)
As a couple of posters have suggested, those look like I-tips, which are generally used for rings or shrink tube installs rather than fusion. Which could very likely be the cause of the strands falling out. I-tips generally dont have enough glue in the tip to use for a fusion install.

Hi Sherrie,
Yes...I agree. So I called the people that we bought the kit from and they said that the pre-tipped Donna Bella strands we received were specifically designed for hot fusion.
And they were part of the kit which included the hot fusion tool. I don't understand why they would be included in the actual fusion kit unless there was some sort of mistake?
Now one of the hair brokers I know said the same thing and he showed me what he calls the U Tip which is shaped like a U at the top but has a lot more glue. He actually sells the U Tip with the hot fusion tool.
He also have the Keratin nail tips they seem to have a lot more glue than either the I or U Tips. What am I missing?
One thing I have to say. The more we test and dig and probe, the more we learn. But we also discover what we didn't know. Sometimes painfully like with Brigid's strands falling out and Angie's hair degrading so quickly.
Thanks Sherrie for your suggesions. We need to look into this further.
I will say that when Billy took the strands that fell out and snipped them and then dipped them into a melted Keratin glue stick and reattached them, they held just fine.
I will also say that overall even though her hair is not as silky and shiny as it was at the intial install, it is still looking good and she likes this Donna Bella hair a lot.
