QuoteReplyTopic: What Happens w/Pros On Fallen Strands? Posted: September 18 2007 at 2:34pm
At some point in our testing cycle I am going to have Brigid go to get a professional install from either GL, SoCap or similar. Haven't decided yet which system would be a good test. Maybe we should test both or even more. For the time being we are doing the DIY-with-help-from-friends testing cycle.
In the meantime I am wondering & have some questions about this latest fusion test on Brigid.
Someone said it is common for strands to drop with fusion methods.
Is this true as well with professional installs using GL or SC? If yes, what is the industry practice for dealing with fallen strands? Do the pros offer to reinstall them at no charge or do they charge? Or do they just explain that a certain number will fall out and leave it at that?
I am just curious what professionals who do GL or SoCap do with this situation? Or maybe it is not a problem for pros and just in the DIY world?

I once had Great Lengths installed for highlights. I got five in the front on each side. The lady charged $10/strand. By day two, three strands fell out. I saved them and she kindly put them back in.I think she was new to extensions in general and didn't apply them properly. If you go to someone with experience you should not experience slippage or loss. If a few fall out I would expect them to put them back in. It doesn't take very long for them anyway.

It depends on the extensionist but I think most would put them back in for free.
My first fusion install was by a professional and I don't recall losing any in the first few days. Around maintenance time I lost a few, they were dangling and needed to be replaced. They became too heavy because of natural hair shedding and came out as I brushed my hair. That could also be a cause of Brigid's bond loss.
I do my own now and my daughter's and that's usually when we lose bonds, when we don't stay on top of our maintenance.
I think a major cause is the pre-tips themselves. I believe the reason I don't lose bonds or experience any shedding is because I pre-tip my own hair, so did my fusionist. I can insure that the tips are thoroughly covered with keratin and I then hold the bonded tip and pull through the hair to remove the loose hair if any. You could do the same with store bought pre-tips. It would still be less time consuming than pre-tipping the hair yourself.
Pre-tipping bulk vs. wefted hair would be a great new project for B&B. Also glue gun vs. glue pot. Some use the fusion iron only with the little fusion chips.

Ms. Honey, the first time I had a full individual install the girl pre-tipped and I had SO much shedding. Obviously user-error. Then I tried with a different guy who used the glue gun and I had loads of shedding.....
When you're pre-tipping do you use a melting pot? I think the girl pre-tipped with a glue gun. Also, what keratin do you use? How long do your installs last?

Hey Malibu, I use a glue gun. The ones I did with the pot were too flexible and I felt that they were weaker. When I apply the glue, I fan out the tip to make sure I cover it all with keratin. I bought keratin sticks from an eBay vendor but they're not there anymore. I bought a lot. I lucked out. They're very good.
My longest install was 6 months with monthly/bi-monthly maintenance. As long as you're pleased with the hair they could last indefintely. It could have lasted longer but I wanted to try a different texture of hair. You're just going through each row and replacing the ones that are dangling from natural hair shedding or ones that have grown a half inch down. I place my fusion about 1/4 from the scalp.
I finger combed my hair through to the roots daily 3-4 times a day to make sure that they weren't twisting together and dreading, gently pulling them apart if necessary. It only take about 2-3 minutes each time.

My policy is that I'll replace up to 20 strands for free within the 12 week time period. With any method, no one has lost that much within that time frame, so it hasn't been a big problem.
As for fusion, I'm doing So.cap now, and it stays in (without shedding) very well. I also had very good success with the Donna Bella strands too.
Diddo, Ive been using SoCap for a while now and they are pretty sturdy. Its normal to lose a few within a 12 week period, but 10 in the first week sounds like too much for me. I also use microrings and they dont fall out that quickly either. Im not sure if its a bad tip or bad application that makes strands fall out that quickly. Good luck with your experiments and let us know how it goes

Hi MetalGirl,
That is an excellent policy and very generous.
While there are many possibilities, we are thinking the main cause of Brigid's falling strands are that the pre-glued tips on top did not have enough glue.
And we think maybe the strands should have been cut in half because they were too heavy for Brigid's hair. Of course several other great suggestions have been provided here by so many who have offer their thoughts and we have not ruled out any of those ideas as well. We are still investigating what might be happening to cause the falling strands.
I appreciate your feedback. SoCap sounds like a good method. And Brigid is really liking the Donna Bella hair. Just today at a meeting a woman complimented Brigid on her beautiful long hair and Brigid laughed and told her it was fusion. The woman could not believe it. She said it looked really good and natural. Good feedback indeed.
