hi-
I am looking to dye my hair a nice brown color (I have a dark complexion similar to that of naomi campell or lauryn hill).
Anyone have any recs either of an at home brand or color that a stylist used that gave a nice brown color on a dark complexion? Please see link below of kelly rowland in pic 3 of 7 and keisha knight. Thanks so much!
Orange tends to come out in hair when its lightened, so you will want a brown with a green base. I'd suggest buying your dye and developer at Sally or another beauty supply shop, as boxed colors in the drugstore won't have the base written on it, and green is important to keep your hair from going orange. Note: The light brown colors with the green bases will likely be called "ash" and the swatches you see there will look more ashy, and not warm like the pics you showed, but the swatch won't be the same as your hair, because orange always comes out when you lift darker hair, and it will usually still wind up with a warmer tone, even with the green base...this is one point where test stranding becomes important.
I can't recommend an exact color for you, but to get those lighter medium brown colors from black, you will need a good bit of lift, probably at least 30 volume developer, if not 40 volume. I can't tell you which exactly, but do test strands on the hidden part of your hair to make sure you are getting exactly the shade you want and enough lift before you do your whole head. (In case you've never done them before, you can either cut off small hidden underneath pieces of hair and tape them to a plate and do them that way, or just leave them attached to you and pin the rest up while you do them.) Good luck!
