QuoteReplyTopic: Red & Green Never Natural Posted: October 26 2007 at 10:26pm
OK, I have been dying my hair for over 10 years. I have tried black, reds and blonds. Currently I have blond ( my natural color is dark blond/light brown) but I want to go to a medium brown. Problem: when I dye my hair any color the red pigment in my hair causes my hair do do strange things. Some products like Loreal make my hair a reddish blond when I use a ash blond, and with Clairol my hair ends up a greenish blond when I use an ash blond. I know I'll be facing this problem with browns to so I'm not sure what to do. Should I maybe stick with Clairol and just not leave it in as long so it doesn't absorb to much of the green tones? Will my roots still color to match the rest of my hair or will it not take if I only leave it in for less then the instructed time? This problem runs in my family so you would certainly be helping more then one person here. I just want a normal and natural medium brown. What should I do? (I prefer permanent hair color and going to a salon is not an option for me, and the longer the hair color stays in the better and I tend to do the whole head of hair when I dye not just a root touch ups). Thanks!

GO to Sally's Beauty Supply & get u a Protein Color Filler.Gte it for brunettes/WHat u do is mix that with your hair color & it will help it get an even all over color, plus it will help it stay brown.I use the red for mine.I color mine red though.I wish I could remeber what it's called.U can ask the store clerk where it is.I'd get a pretty med. brown in Ion Brillence Color.I just recolored mine 2 days ago.I love that brand.U can read reviews about it first online before u buy it.It was 3.99 & the devloper is in a purple or blue bottle.I'm color blind with those colors, so not sure what color it is really, lol!I'd get a 10 devloper.Theyh ave some many pretty colors to pick from.I wouldn't ever get an ash color.I always tend to hate those colors. They look so plan to me,or turn green.Well, Let me know if u need any more help.I'm on myspace if u go on there any.

Different companies use different bases for their colors. I know that several Clairol colors use green as a base. Unless you have legitimate red pigments in your hair (like Ronald McDonald red,) it will appear green. I'd call the dye manufacturer and see if they can recommend an ash color that doesn't have a green base.
Also, you may have better luck going to Sallys and choosing a color there. Rather than just calling colors "ash" or "golden," they list the color base on the bottle, so you can avoid a color with a green base.

Try going to this website (clairol) and asking them. They are VERY helpful. Just fill out the stuff to chat with a live color specialist.
They will ask what color your hair is now,and what color you want it to be.
Then they will tell you step by step how to getthe color you want!
Be sure to tell them you DONT want ash or golden, but NEUTRAL.
However, they may suggest golden at first since your hair is blonde and needs the gold/red tones added back in before going darker.
Good luck!

Hi,
I have the same natural color as you dark blonde/light brown and am also looking to go for a richer brunette shade. I want it to be neutral too, which does not seem an easy feat so I am taking my time with research. I'd lov eto know which shade you decided to go with and how it turned out. My hair is kind of brassy right now so I'm afraid if I add a neutral shade, it will just turn out reddish brown. Hope you keep us posted!
