QuoteReplyTopic: Is it true cheaper hair is more tangly? Posted: October 31 2007 at 2:30pm
Hi--I'm new here, have been lurking for a while & have some questions. I have naturally curly hair & made the mistake of frying it w/a curl reducer, so I got extensions until my natural curl can grow back (I'm thinking 3-4 years? ).
In any case, the extensions get very tangly & the result is when I comb it (wide tooth comb only of course) I lose a fair amount of hair getting through the knots. So now I only comb it 2-3 times a day to save the hair I spent a fortune for.
After reading several posts about how lower quality hair tangles I'm wondering if I paid high quality pricing for low quality hair? The woman who did it didn't match the textures well (for some reason she intermingled wavy w/curly, but my hair is very curly--think Andie McDowell curly) & she swore up & down it was Russian virgin. I'm using someone new b/c the first woman did such a poor texture match (& wasn't a very nice person either), & the hair the new gal ordered for me is soft, beautiful, perfectly matches my natural curl & does seem to be less prone to tangling (scheduled to replace the wavy on Nov. 30--can't wait!).
So now, after spending $2000 on my first install I'm thinking I got ripped off. Good color match, bad texture match.........bad quality hair as well?
P.S. sorry, tried to post a pic but stupid work firewall won't let me!

Not necessarily, it may very well have been Russian Virgin, but it may not have been (and sounds like it wasn't) remy hair, which will result in tangling! Can you work something out with her? A refund? How long have you had this hair installed?

I got it in July. I don't think she'd give me a refund, like I said, she wasn't a very nice lady.
But when I went to see the hair my new lady ordered today I was really surprised at the difference in how it felt. I'm new to this & I'm learning every day (much thanks to this forum!). Can I use the hair I have now, plus the new hair, & keep replacing the older hair as time goes by? I just don't have enough money to replace it all at once.
Thanks so much for your help!

I was also wondering what kind of an install was it or attachment method? Since you paid so much for this hair, I would keep it. If you cant get a refund what else can you do with it really? Someone might buy it who is a closer texture match to the Russian wavy for a bit of a discount. You could ask around.
As far as your texture match, it sounds like you have a tighter curl pattern so wavy would not cut it on any kind of hair. You might be able to blend them since your new gal has found a better match. Then you can gradually swap out but still feel like you got your money's worth out of the Russian. Lord knows it isnt cheap. Im wearing the straight Russian so I know its high but luckily for me it worked out good because i have fine, straight hair so it blends easily.
if one of my clients paid 2 grand for their hair extensions, i would make sure they were 110% happy- could you go back to her? maybe bring someone with you and see if she could work with you. just because it is russian hair doesnt mean it matched your hair.
how long has it been since your install.
Bringing beauty, one head at a time...

The method is HairLocs. The install was in July, I've had one maintenance since. When I asked her about the tangling she told me to "just put Pantene detangler in it" to comb it out.
I was thinking the tangling & knotting was b/c the hair is curly & that straight hair probably didn't have this problem, but now I'm starting to wonder.........& I'm pretty sure she doesn't care about whether I'm happy w/it or not. When I told her I wasn't very pleased w/her services she told me to just find someone else.
Awful! And you paid this woman $2000 and are being treated in this fashion?! Just terrible. So she used what she is claiming to be Virgin Russian hair in wavy texture using Hairlocs?
If I was you, I would march into her salon and confront her. Be polite and professional, yet firm in tone. Basically explain that this wavy hair that she ordered is not a good match to your natural texture and you are displeased. I would not even mention the tangling issues as she might use that as an opportunity to claim it was your fault somehow and you abused the extensions or did not use the correct products (unscrupulous hair stylists always go there).
Just let her know in no uncertain terms you are unhappy and would like to resolve this issue. If she tries the "isn’t my problem" attitude which she has given you thus far, kindly explain to her that you would like to see a receipt for this "Virgin Russian Hair" and where she purchased it from. You are entitled to that since there is now a problem. In my opinion, for $2000, there needs to be some compromise here. I think it’s possible she might have scammed you and that is not even Russian hair but perhaps just the standard hair that Hairlocs supplies or uses. I’m not saying that for a fact, but her attitude seems to indicate a certain level of evasiveness.

Oops didn’t see that July thing. I was thinking this just happened. Ya you should have acted as soon as you realized the hair was not a good match. Most reasonable stylists will give you a week or so to adjust to the extensions and help you if you are having problems with them. This woman sounds like the second you left her salon; she released the hounds and put up iron gates. Its poor customer service but take it as a learning experience.
Keep in mind for the future you can almost always buy the hair you want yourself online. That way you know what you are getting and who you bought it from. Also that it is the proper match for your texture and curls. To be honest I have not heard a good Russian hair/curl match story yet. Wavy yes, but not curly.

You know, it's funny you wrote that Krimsa b/c when she did the install in July I told her a couple of times that although I loved the curly I was concerned about the wavy. She kept telling me once it blended it'd look fine. I guess I should've said something but my own hair was so fried I was just grateful to look like a girl again.
I'm of eastern European descent so I thought the Russian Virgin would be a good match for me. My hair is really curly but also very fine. The new hair I'm getting at the EOM is almost an exact match to my own except softer & less frizzy. But at this point I'm so paranoid & suspicious!
I've been going through the FAQs on this forum & now that I know it's here I will be coming to you guys for advice next time I get new hair! Thanks so much for your help.........
Well I’m glad it worked out and it’s all about finding the right match for your own hair. It can be difficult and a lot of trial and error. I think I got off easy with straight hair. I think curly might be harder to find and blend in some cases, especially if it’s very tight curls or a strong wave. But it’s all out there and you can find it eventually. You can also try to style your hair to match the extensions and maybe that’s what she thought you would do but it seems to me to try to force curly hair to be wavy every day would be too difficult and not many people want to hassle with that. Not to mention it would probably take a toll on your natural hair and might cause damage. I always try to stick with the closest possible match to my natural hair which happens to be Russian straight. That way it blends and little to no styling required of either.
it really upsets me when stylists are rude to their clients, espicially AFTER they do your hair. i learn on here everyday how to treat and not treat my clients.
hopefully the next gal u go to will take better care of you, dont worry, it always comes around,...... karma ya know?
I agree tangles. It's also a two way street and I know that some clients can have unreal expectations about their hair and what can and cant be done with extensions. Hair extensions arent magic. They are great but do require some extra work to keep them up and looking their best.
However from everything you have said here it seems this particular stylist was just downright rude, unhelpful and possibly a bit of a scam artist but there is no way to know that for certain.
Anyway, good luck and post some pics when you can of the hair you like!

I'm sorry you ended up with cruddy Virgin Russian hair. Is your hair tangling all over or just in certain sections. Sometimes a few hairs can get turned upside down causing the hair to tangle and mat. You have a few options available if you choose to keep your tangling Russian. You can have the tangled/matted sections replaced with the new hair or you can have your tangly Russian hair wefted and use it for a bonded or sewn in weave to use later on. It'll cost you more money to have it done but at least you won't have to throw away $2000 worth of hair and will be able to reuse it. You can have the tangly Russian aligned properly for bulk hair to use with cold or hot fusion again but it'll cost more than the wefting.

Oh she was just awful! She spent the entire time either bashing other clients or gossiping about the various men she was sleeping with. She was so mean, & I realized when I had my first maintenance I was actually AFRAID of her, that's when I knew it was time to spend my hard earned money with someone else. I'm pretty sure my expectations weren't unrealistic b/c truthfully I had no idea what to expect.
Ms. Honey, it's tangled at the ends--pretty much the bottom 4 inches or so. Very hard to comb. At my next maintenance I'm having some new hair put in but not all. I guess I'll just replace it bit by bit, if that's even possible.
Just for clarification, I didn't spend $2000 just on the hair, that was for the hair & the install, which took about 2 hours. Stupid me, I didn't ask for the breakdown so I have no idea what I spent on the actual hair.
I would be interested to know where she purchased this hair from exactly. Its quite suspicious. Either way, she should have tried a little harder to actually match your curls. She sounds like a real meanie. Yikes, that would scare me also lol. I once had extensions put in by a lady that screamed a lot. She would holler and i was standing right by her. It grated on my nerves. It wasnt like people were across the room or anything, she was just a loud talker by nature. lol
