QuoteReplyTopic: Relaxing Hair with Extensions In Posted: November 06 2007 at 12:48pm
Howdy. I am new to the forum and hair extensions. I just had extensions put in one week ago and am unsure on how to:
blow dry my own hair (it is naturally curly)
if I can relax my own hair with the extensions in.
I believe that I have bonded extensions, in small wefts. Russian hair that has not been color treated (if any of that makes a difference). I am Black, but don't know of anyone else that has ever had extensions. These look great, but I don't know how to style them. I paid 1500 to have them put in and don't want to spend anymore having them styled...
Any ideas???

I feel your pain gal...I spent more than that when I use to wear great lenghts....but I also had a thermal straightner put on...color etc.
It's better to have that done before you do your install...I would be scared to try a relaxer on my new bonds/hair.
You may just have to flat iron and do the best you can this time.
You also need a looper brush as not to pull your extensions out...geez for 1500 bucks your salon should of given you one with the extensions...my gal always did. I use a large round barrel brush that has the metal and holes in it....for my top hair that doesn't have any extensions in it. I also use a large flat brush for the rest. MAKE sure when you brush either dry or wet/ to hold your hair ...like holding a ponytail...brush the bottom and then work your way up your hair....just keep the tension off your root area where the bonds/wefts are.
Thanks,
JeepGirl
Current install-Bohyme Bodywave #30 and #14 in the straight hair/ they didn't have the #14 in bodywave, so I mixed them...works great!

So, I won't actually be able to dry my roots then as I will have to hold the hair from the weft part and dry down, right? I should have gotten a relaxer BEFORE I put them in, but I have a big party coming up and just couldn't wait and I was not due for a relaxer for another couple of months. I have a round brush, but it is made of boar's bristles. Will that pull the hair out?
Short answer is that you should relax before installing extensions. The risk is high that the relaxer could get trapped between your extensions and your natural hair leading to over processing and damage to your hair.

I'll just add my two cents here (pun intended! ) and tell you to THINK VERY LONG & HARD before you relax your hair! The whole reason I ended up w/extensions is b/c I had a curl reducer done & the results were disastrous. My thick, fine, healthy, curly, beautiful hair ended up looking like a disgusting, frizzy mess. I could do nothing with it except blow it straight, which took forever in the morning.
I hope I don't sound too negative, I'd just hate to see someone else suffer the way I did.

I find it easier to hold the hair with one hand, brush out any tangles....and then let go and gently run a flat brush over and over the length of the hair...when mostly dry is when I take my flat brush and brush throush the scalp area where my wefts are and gently pull up and to the side as I blow dry. Pulling gently to the side and drying completely will help to straigthen your hair. I have super curly hair and I wear the bohyme straight and curl it most of the time. I also put a track around the bottom of my hair line and then put my first tape/row above that....now I don't have that fizzy short hair hanging in my way.
Anyway.....most definetely dry your root area...just be careful not to pull down with any brush above the weft otherwise you can break your own hair. I find that the large flat brush and the round/barrel brush with the holes and stiff brissles work the best for me and my curly/nappy hair....and this really greasy IC serum I get from SAllys.....works wonders for dry/fried hair.

I believe she is already getting her hair relaxed.. She just couldn't wait for her touch up because she wanted her long hair NOW!!!

Jeep girl-
A few questions... I want a similar instaLl to yours and I have pretty curly, fine, caucasian (sp?) hair (think keri russel, maybe a little less curly but pretty close)... the thing is I NEVER wear it curly I always blow dry it out with a round brush, so of course I want straight extensions... my hair straightens out pretty easily but I don't know exactly how to go about doing that with extensions in... any ideas?... oh and also.. would I have to go with wefts to be able to do this or is there a way to do a micro ring type method and still be able to blow dry it straight? Any tips you have would be great! Thanks a bunch!

oh lord girl....you have soooooooooo many options with your hair. Just really depends on the look your trying to achieve...how much you want to spend......any method you choose, you will be able to blow dry straight....and with a large barrel curling iron.....well the possibilities are endless.
I choose to wear the tape and weft method...
Pros:
1)-is wayyyy cheaper 2)-I can do it myself 3) lots of hair
Cons
1)can't wear high pony tails 2) tape can get sticky...but some powder on the tracks will usually take care of that .
I love individual strand methods....but it takes to long for me to do an install and I hate losing strands......and that will happen.....especially if I did them myself and usually in the back of my head where I didn't get them in really good. I love the free flowing of the hair also with this method....but I can add strand by strand around my face and around the top....this is a great combo method.
So....it comes down to how much do you want to spend and how often can you afford to have them re-done.....strand methods need a take down usually around 3 months....others differ here......tape/weft method generally every 4-5 weeks..some go longer...but not me.....can't stand it, need to re-do. When I use bohyme hair in the straight or bodywave I can wear that hair 2 plus months.....I think the straight last longer due to less processing.
Thanks,
JeepGirl

Good to know! Thanks so much, that really clarifies things for me.... I think I'm gonna try to do a few straight wefts tonight and if I need more around the front I'll get some strandby strand put in... thanks again!
