Hello to all, I have noticed alot of inquiries on hair extensions for ethnic hair. Well, I am a licensed cosmetologist and here are some of my suggestions.

Depending on how often you have to recieve relaxers, hotoils and conditioners are a number one factor when recieving extensions.

Hair fusion (keratin)- The attachement (hair) has an adhesive on the tip. The tip is applied under your hair and a hair wand is used to melt the adhesive. The adhesive and hair are rolled to make a nice smooth bond. The application can be used with just a hotpot or glue gun.

Pro's-More flexible wear, can be worn in high ponytail, half up and down, you can add pieces to make highlights

Con's- A lot of weight on hair after hair has grown out during wear. Alot of maintenance is required. The bonds must be dry also, or they will become guey and your extension hair will shed. You cannot recieve conditioning or hot oil treatments to the scalp.

Microrings- This method is used with Itipped hair.

Pro's- No heat,More flexible wear, can be worn in high ponytail, half up and down, you can add pieces to make highlights

Con's- Rings can show, make sure your're allergic to copper or metal. Sometimes the paint comes off attachement. Some pieces of the Itipped hair are reusable. No conditioning and hotoil.

Sew in's- (Full head) The entire head is sewn up with tiny braids. The hair can be attached onto the braids or a net.

Pro's- You will achieve alot of hair growth, the hair has a chance to rest. You can use oil on the scalp if needed. You can use oil between tracks, and liquid conditioners.

Con's- Itchy, you have to use products that alleviate this. Depending on how think your own hair is you can wear into a pony tail. The braids must dry, it not they will become smelly. There are some things you can do to alleviate odor.

Each extension method has its flaw. In my opinion, the sew in is the best method for african american hair. I have studied alot of hair extension methods, and anything that allows your hair a rest from heat, weather ect is a good method. You actually see results.

I hope this helps. I probably didn't cover everything, but you can also vist:
www.blackhairmedia.com for more information. The ladies over here do more strand by strand methods, and those methods work well, but not on all of us. Oh yeah, don't ever leave any extension method in longer than 12 weeks. It just depends on how often you shampoo and how fast your hair grows out.

Hey, I'm half black/half white and I live in Orange County, I have pretty much NO guidance when it comes to black hair care. I am thinking about getting extensions, the sew in method. I don't really want them super long, just longer than my hair now. Your post really helped, but I'm wondering, depending on the quality of hair you buy, can it be reused, or is it like a one time deal?
