Hi!

I have a pretty worn hair but don't wanna cut it all off, of course. I am new to this forum and read something about S&D or Search and destroy. Could anyone explain how this is done?  Can you do it on yourself?

Yes, you can do it yourself.  Some people twist small sections of hair, like a 1cm. section, making the splits stick out for easy cutting.  I just sort through it cutting off any splits I see.  Cut straight across, right above the split, bend, or white dot.  Be careful to keep most of your efforts at the ends of your hair.  (Once I cut too many too close to my scalp and the resulting halo took years to grow out.)

Another point- I find that when the hair is plaited (braided) little ends stick out and you can find the splits that way. Also make sure that you cut directly straight across. As in a T the cut being the top of the T! Otherwise it will just develop another split end. And make sure to use proper hair scissors- that are sharp and designed to cut hair- this will help prevent the return of a split
