    Posted: August 22 2002 at 1:37am

For the past week, every night before I go to bed, I`ve been braiding my hair. I thought that this would keep the tangles out of my hair. But when I take the braid out my hair is wavey. And even after I wash it, some of the hairs stay wavey.

Can braiding your hair be damaging? And does anyone have any explanation for why that happened to my hair?

I remember a couple months ago this never happened when I braided it...... PLEASE HELP!

My best guess would be that somehow your hair is being exposed to some sort of moisture.

If you sweat a lot this could be a reason. If you are braiding your hair while wet or damp that can do it.
Or if the air in your room is damp or humid that could do it too. But it doesn`t always take moisture. Sometimes if you do a braid really well it will stay wavy longer.

Unless you are pulling really tight or wearing really tight braids I don`t think it will damage your hair.

Have you changed products in the past few months? Perhaps a product is building up on your hair. Just a guess.

I don`t think it would have anything to do with moisture or humidity.:) I live in one of the coldest cities in Turkey and my house is always cold! I"m definitly not sweating.

I never braid my hair when wet. I usually wait for it to dry completly and then comb it,,, then do the braiding.

When I came here four months ago from America, I started to use hard water.Do you know how hard water exactly effects your hair?? I do know my hair is in worse shape since I moved here. It`s not as soft and tangles easily.

:P:) thank for your help... :)

I can`t say exactly how hard water affects it because it would depend upon what is in your water. Everything has its own pH and different pH`s act differently on hair and they also act upon each other.

Hard water is bad for hair. This could be causing your problems. My only advice would be to look for hair products that are for hard water or well water or maybe even swimmers hair if you can`t find the other two.

There is a brand in the US called Malibu 2000 that makes these kinds of products but I don`t know if they are in Turkey.

As far as the cold air goes, cold air can be just as moist as hot air.

Anyway do what you can about the hard water before you worry about the braiding. See if you can find a filter or something for your faucet. Try not to wash your length as much. The scalp area is usually dirtier or oilier than the rest of your hair. Most people don`t apply shampoo to their length, they apply to the scalp and lightly scrub the scalp then they let the rinse water carry the shampoo through the rest.

There are a lot of ladies over at this message board that might be able to help you more

Dear Brandi,
I am a guy who has hair halfway down my back and it is healthy, I don`t perm it, bleach it color it, etc. . I also don`t braid it. My wife and my teenage daughters have wanted to braid my hair and I have told them no. How could tying your hair in knots be good for your hair! My wife didn`t push the issue she would prefer to brush my hair than braid it, but my daughters couldn`t understand why since I wear my hair long I wouldn`t try a braid. But I don`t think it is good for hair, plus, of the many ways you can wear long hair, I don`t think braids look that good on men or women! At least for most people.

whether or not braids can be damaging on your hair really depends on how tight they are put in and what hair tie you are using at the bottom to fasten the braid. if they are really tight it is possible that it could break the hair, likewise if the hair tie is put in too tight or it has metal on it, it could also damage the hair. i think if the braid(s) are not too tight, that it is a good way of keeping hair from getting tangly. i especially think they can be less damaging than ponytails because you are putting the hair ties on the bottom where it would be easier to trim off any damage that may occur.
