I just bought a box of Garnier Cool Brown with the nutra-brown "technology" since I have very dark hair. I'm scared to dye it that color because my friend just recently dyed her hair and it came out feeling like a very dried out wig. However, i want to dye my hair lighter but I know that it won't come out looking like the color on the box. What should i do??

maybe it is the brand of color she used....is it the same that you are wanting to use?  there are colors in at sally's that are for people with dark hair wanting to go lighter.....check those out.
