I've heard I should ask for a 'full head of highlights' instead of just all bleach to get these sort of styles. And what would I do about my root regrowth? As my roots would be a dirty blonde.
What I want: Natural, lighter blonde sections, textured.
What I don't want: Ginger or yellow, complete all-over blonde.
Your roots will look brown when they grow out because of the contrast with the lighter hair. Roots will still need to be done, but darker roots with lighter hair is not as unusual looking as light roots on darker hair.
A full head of highlights will be like that, and when your roots grow, you'll get the dark underneath look like in the second photo, so you may still like your roots for longer that way. Make sure you bring the picture to show them and tell them you want ash blonde, (if you don't go for ash is when you may get yellow or orangy tones).
p.s. You will likely still have to do something every 2-3 months, that is not that frequent for roots. All over blonde jobs usually need the roots done every 3-4 weeks to keep it from looking like it has any roots.

Yes having lighter roots with darker hair is a big more "OFF" looking than just having darker roots and lighter hair.
You will indeed still have to touch up, but not as often as you would being a solid brown or blonde. My gf is a really light blonde and she lifts her color a shade or so and she still has to do her roots, it isn't noticable until it gets really long. But if your tired of it, you may be able to go longer cause it won't look so "OFF" anymore if you have roots peaking through.
(Another g.f I had dyed her pretty blonde hair BLACK, talk about really bad roots!)
I love the first photo's color! YOu def. wont' have any trouble getting to this color at all... good luck!
The only thing I was wondering is what will happen to the light brown already over my hair. I guess there will still be some parts of it as I would only get a full head of highlights, but the thing is - I'd have the blonde full head of highlights over my coloured brown, then my coloured brown and then my natural dark blonde roots coming through as my hair grows.
My brown fades to a really horrible warm gingery brown (as I'm naturally a medium blonde), so I wouldn't want it to go like that with my blonde highlights over it. Thanks.
That is a good point, do be sure to tell them that your hair is dyed brown so they will know if they have to lift it before doing the highlights.
If they get the highlights close enough to your head, it should blend better, not leaving a brown stripe at the root. That is another good thing to point out to them, that you want the highlights as close to your scalp as they can get them to avoid that.
