Alright, so for some reason the underneath layer of my hair is REALLY dry.. to the point where it's been breaking off and is now about 2 inches shorter than the rest of my hair. And it's not just the ends, it's like the WHOLE bottom layer, nearly from root to tip. No matter how much I condition/deep condition it, it still stays dry and I'm really worried that it's all gonna break off and I won't have any bottom layer left Confused I haven't been applying any heat to it for a couple months but it's still pretty bad. I've even tried protein treatments, which worked a little, but it still feels really coarse and dry. I just don't know what to do any more and I really don't know what caused this. I have to tie my hair up a lot for work, but could that really have anything to do with it?
Are there any good products you guys can suggest that will help my hair feel soft and healthy again?

Thanks in advance!

xx

Your hair could be breaking off from being tied up. When my hair was long, I was wearing it in a ponytail everyday. When I went in to get a trim, my hairdresser asked me if she layered it the last time I was in. She said it was all broke off in the back. She asked me if I wore my hair in ponytail, I told her I did all the time. She said thats what caused my hair to break off.

Thanks! I really had a feeling it had something to do with that. How did you go about fixing this problem?

I was getting sick of having long hair, is why I was wearing it in a ponytail everyday. Shortly after that I ended up cutting it off.

If you HAVE to wear your hair up everyday, maybe you can find a better way that won't tear your hair out. You could post in the long hair forum, someone there might be able to help you better.

Good luck!

Ok if you wear your hair up every day I guarentee that has something to do with your problem.  Especially if you are using hairspray.  Try using gel (buy one that does not have any alcohol in it!) Garnier has a good one.  A spray on leave in conditioner might also help.  Salon brands are good but if you are like me and can't afford it try thermasilk.  Use soft scrunchies on your hair and not bands and you can also use a shampoo & conditioner for damaged/color treated hair like the herbal esscences rose hips  origional.  it is pink and in a clear bottle.  You can also try brushing your hair from the tips to the roots and that will lessen breakage.  Washing every other day helps too if you wear it up it shouldn't be a big deal if it gets oily the 2nd day.  Hope this helps.  I am the queen of damaged hair I dye it more than I probably should but these tricks help my hair recoup.
