QuoteReplyTopic: Dark Ash Blonde or Dark Neutral Blonde with UnRed? Posted: May 29 2008 at 8:27pm
My natural hair color is light brown. I have bad highlights and roots and want to color it dark blonde. My hair pulls red and goes brassy very easily. I would either use dark ash blonde or dark neutral blonde with some unred it. What is the difference in effect? Thank you for any help!
Sorry, I can't predict for you what each of those combinations will do, (I'm not a pro) but I think its pretty likely that straight dye like this may not lift light brown hair enough to make it come out dark blonde. Ash blonde usually has a violet base (though in some cases it does have blue). If it has a violet base, your brown hair will lift to orange. If it has blue, you should be okay using it, even though it may not lift as much as you want. Maybe it will, so test strand just to make sure.

Yeah, good advice from Susan. I wanted to add: always go with an ash tone if you are lightening/lifting brown hair. Everyone lifts warm! You probably could even use the dark ash blonde (or whatever it's called) with some unred, and it will still likely come out a bit warm or at least neutral. Dark blonde is a difficult colour to achieve, unless you are already blonde! If you want TRUE dark blonde hair, you need to bleach up to level 9 (pale blonde) and then deposit down to, like, a level 7 or 8 (neutral colour). Good luck with it!
Thanks for all the replies and advice. My husband wants me to go to the salon; I just have to wait until we can afford it. The girl I used to go to retired, and this whole mess with brassy color and bad highlights got started due to my trying to go DIY. (You can spend a lot of money actually, buying dye and highlights and trying to fix the mess.)
I will probably just grow it out and cut it and start over with fresh highlights at a salon, or definitely have it cut and dyed to my natural color, then highlighted. I used to have very blond thin highlights that looked nice for a long time. I don't want to get started on the home color and covering roots and mistakes, again.
I'm sure I will be glad I did later. My husband keeps saying there is nothing wrong with my hair. (Love is blind.) I said that I have roots, and he said, "At least you have roots, instead of being bald." Anyway, when we can afford it, he wants to take me to the salon and get it done right.
