Her hair's SO incredibly shiny/silky/soft/flowing healthy looking. It used to me a darker more golden blonde.
What color would you call it now?
I actually emailed her hairdresser in NY years ago, he would not reveal what he uses.
Do you think it's maybe hi-lift instead of bleach, maybe Goldwell hair color? If so, what shade?
Or maybe she's mostly gray and they just put on a blonde color like Goldwell which tends to be really shiny.
Or maybe bleach, but I don't think so.
Any ideas? I'd LOVE her hair color and shine/gloss, and I know they make hair serums and glosses for shine but I never get that soft silky "glow" like she has.

Ocean, I agree --- I LOVE Diane's hair colour. Always have! Just beautiful and pale; kind of ashy.
I'm sorry I did not watch the clip you posted -- I'm lazy today! But, I think I remember what her hair colour looks like now. You are right; it's paler now.
I think you hit the nail on the head with the gray idea. She is older now (and paler blonde). The gray/white in her hair would make it much easier to maintain a pale blonde. It's one of the reasons I don't mind going gray! haha. they could be applying a nice light blonde to her gray, but I doubt it's highlift --- they are not supposed to be used on gray hair. Something about not enough pigment to see the colour?
So it's possible, maybe AFTER they bleach it, that they could put on a toner/glaze and perhaps it could be Goldwell, maybe 10 ash or 10 ash mixed with 10 neutral do you think?
I've heard that, also, that gray hair is difficult to get the color to hold onto it, and if the color isn't STRONG, the gray hair will look odd. So you're right, the hi-lift colors have LOTS of ammonia and not so much color pigment and wouldn't last long on gray hair.
So, the gray hair "stain" method is good, where you open the gray hair cuticle with just putting 20 vol. developer on the gray hair BEFORE you do any color, let it sit on there for 5 min, wash out, THEN apply color.
The color get into the gray hair BETTER this way, because the developer has opened up the cuticle better, making it more ready to accept the hair color and color lasts longer.
See, I've been reading a LOT of stuff about color, ! [IMG]smileys/badger.gif" align="middle" />
To Fakeizme, I don't know if this link will show up, but it's interesting, from the redken website, the discussion forums, they give out all kinds of formulas for toning after bleaching, but anyway, the below discussion if it comes up is about cutting the Brass with hi-lift, the new "T" series whatever that is, lol.
If the link doesn't work, then just go to www.redken.com and, if you haven't already, which you probably know all about this, click on "professional products" and register as a student or stylist and you can go to the discussion forums/ I'm learning SO much

Oooooo, thanks for the link Ocean! Always looking to learn more! I love reading what Professional hairstylists are using and about their color questions and solutions. Two others that I also go on as a 'student' are Askmags.com and behindthechair.com --- wealth of info. I'm going to join the one you gave me. Never heard of the 'T' series Redken series! Oh wait, I think I have on Askmags.com....something about it being a sheer toner??
Ocean, you are learning so fast (isn't colour fun?)! I think you have it right about the 10N and 10A on Diane's colour. Need a lot of neutral for gray hair. Supposedly you should always use 20 volume on gray/white hair as well. And the presoftening you mentioned is great too.
Actually, I am curious to see how I will be able to alter my routine (bleaching) once I go more white! I'm hoping I will be able to use a light blonde colour, which should bring up my dark hair to copper brown colour while turning the gray into highlights --- that may be wishful thinking!
Hi Fakeizme! askmags.com, she uses Compagnia del Colore hair color, right? I read her posts on behindthechair.com, and she raves about CDC hair color. I wonder if it's as good as she says with LOW smell and shine and lasting color?
I also, as you know, have grays, and was wondering the same thing, after I bleach a few strands for crown highlights, putting a blonde color on the rest of my virgin hair, which sounds like similar color to yours! Mine is medium brown, 40% gray, and I'm wondering what brand of blonde haircolor would be best to make my mousey brown hair a pretty color while making my grays a PRETTY blonde color. The blonde color needs to have LOTS of pigment in it. Redken Double Fusion Blondes, maybe?? Wella Blondissimes?
What brand are you thinking of using on your gray/brown natural hair for the blonde color (not the bleach but the blonde color)? I was thinking of Chi because it's no ammonia, mild smell. I also heard "Formulate" hair color has no ammonia, mild smell.
Well, ColorSilk also has no ammonia, but I don't think their blonde colors have Much color pigment, do they? It seems a little transparent to me, maybe I'm wrong.
I also thought of Satin Developus hair color, but it also seems a little transparent on the blondes, I think I want LOTS of blonde pigment, a strong blonde hair color like the way L'Oreal Excellence or Preference looks. But those colors have too much ammonia and smell for me to use.
Do you know if Chi haircolor or Formulate hair color is good for blondes , and covers gray well, has high blonde pigment?
I wish I could try on lots of colors, or I just WISH there was a website that had LOTS of photos of clients who have certain hair colors on of all different brands, that would be a good website to look and compare how all the haircolors look.
I want SHINE, LOW smell, no ammonia, and high blonde pigment - that's the haircolor brand I want.
Alfa-Parf, I wonder what it's like, lol ??

Oh Alaparf is supposed to be very good. I bought 6 tubes of it's highlift blonde on Ebay for cheap and haven't looked at the box since! I'm a bit of a hoarder!
The trick for you will be the low ammonia. I think Paul Mitchell and CHI -- for sure --- have low ammonia and are pretty high shine. Not sure how they cover blondes or gray. This is where the ART of colour comes in because if you buy the right product, you could mix and match to find your perfect formula! That's where a good hairdresser comes in.
Yeah Mags does use Compagnia Del Coloure --- supposed to be one of the best colours. Don't think it's available to non-professionals though.
Also, remember that if you get a more opaque blonde colour, it will lift your brown to a warm/brassy colour (probably). Your hair will always be warm (not sure if you care about that). I think you're going to have to play around and try different colours that cover your gray but lighten your brown to a nice colour.
Currently, I am using a highlift Wella (can't remember the series name) to lift my brown, then I use bleach for the top. I'll keep doing this until I get more gray --- the problem is, my hair's so light, I can't really tell where my blonde is!
Do you think there are blonde colors with a good amount of shine that also look like they have a really high dye pigment, in other words, shiny but TONS of blonde thick looking color instead of shiny and transparent?
I'm thinking Goldwell and Schwarzkopf. but something bothers me a little about Goldwell blonde colors, don't know how to explain it, sometimes the blondes remind me of silver and gold coins, lol, do you know what I mean? Not a brassiness but a "metal" or "Chrome" look to it.

I know EXACTLY what you are talking about Ocean! Good description: metal. I think that might be what they are going for. I think it can look awesome on the right head.
Hmmm....Blonde colour with high shine, heavy pigment...the Italians are good at those. The European colour lines like Alaparf and Colorly (Compagnia Del Colore?) are known for being more opaque and use a lot of blues/greens to offset the gold/orange tones that come out on the dark heads they often work on. You might want to try one of those. You're really making me think! I guess it could get expensive if you have to try a few, eh?
Thank you Fakeizme! I knew you'd get what I meant when I said "metal", not really in a bad way, just different.
I'm glad I can make you think hard, lol.... I know I'm asking lots of questions, but I never can seem to make up my mind what to do and just do it
I've been wanting to see what Alfa-Parf color and CDC color look like. There's a few salons here that use Alfa-Parf color. There's only one salon here that uses CDC color, maybe I'll go check them out soon.
I'm thinking more and more of using Chi color if I do it myself since it's supposed to have little smell - but have you seen any Chi blondes? I'm worried about the gray hair coverage and if Chi blonde color is very pretty ??.
I'm wondering also, if the Chi color doesn't cover my grays , if the color's too transparent, what happens if I use a demi-perm. color after I use the permanent color? Does it help quite a bit to add more blonde pigment?
