QuoteReplyTopic: Help me! What can I do to fix this? Posted: June 09 2008 at 4:58pm
Hello everyone,
I'm glad to have found this forum because I need hair colour help.
Five days ago, I spent a lot of money getting my hair dyed and highlight and I hate it! When I told my hairdresser what I wanted, I pictured medium warm brown with slight highlights to give it texture.
I ended up with ashy medium-light brown hair with brassy blonde highlights that don't match it. Naturally, I have dark brown hair and green eyes so it looks terrible on me...not that it would look good on anyone.
So...what can I do without spending more money on a professional. It makes me sick to my stomach to think about how much money I just wasted...and then my car broke down yesterday so I'm broke now!
I'm thinking of going to the drugstore and buying a box of semi-permanant colour in a warm medium brown colour. Will that work or just make things worse? Is it too soon? Will it damage my hair? Will it dye everything one colour or will the highlights end up lighter than the rest?
Thanks so much!
P.S. To make things worse, I asked for "more long bangs" but ended up with short bangs that I can't do anything with. Oh...and the highlights in the bangs are much lighter and chunkier that the rest of my head. Ahhh!...they're going to take forever to grow out.
I'll take a pic if I can figure out how to post it.

I'm so sorry you have had a bad experience, really you should go back and ask them to fix it. I am a hairstylist and I always tell my clients if they feel in anyway that their hair colour is too dark, or too light to come back as it can be sorted. Glad to say no one has yet came back, lol.
Your stylist has not left the hi lights on long enough.
If you decided to use a box colour in a warm brown, it will turn your hi lights into a nice soft caramel colour and should turn the rest of your hair a warm brown. I would suggest a semi, just to see how it turns out.
Let me know how you get on and good luck, Karen.
PS if you use a semi colour, it will not cause any more damage to your hair.

IA with Karen. Really sorry about your predicament. That sucks! Your hairstylist should fix it free of charge.
If you don't want to go back, the warm brown semi or even a warm brown shampoo/conditioner would probably do the trick (easy way out!). If you do go that route, I would spray your highlights with some type of conditioner/leave-in beforehand so they don't go drab on you. They may be porous. However, if they're orangey or yellow now, they you'll probably be fine in just dying over them. Hope it works out!
Love clip-ins and tape!

I'm too chicken to go back and tell her I don't like it. I'd also feel like a liar because I said I loved it before I left. Don't know why I said that.
Anyways, I'm happy to hear that semi colour will work and that I won't loose the hightlights! I may not end up doing that though because I'm tempted to try the warm brown shampoo/conditioner. Where can I find that? Would the Pantene brunette line work or are you talking about something different?
Thanks again!

Oh Laura, I know where you're coming from in not wanting to go back! I do the same thing: tell them I like it when I don't. I think I just want to get the h*ll out of there!
The brunette shampoo/conditioner is available at most salons. Don't buy the Pantene; it's a waste of money! Not that I am against Pantene (love their conditioners), but they don't actually put any pigment in their products, so I don't know why they sell them as Colour shampoos/conditioners!
If you want a good one, try Artec (think it's called 'Brunette') -- they have a variety of brown-haired conditioners. Very highly pigmented. Also, Bumble & Bumble, Goldwell Color Glow, Sebastian Cellophanes are all very good. Don't waste your time in a drugstore though; go to a salon (they'll have a variety for you to choose from). I hope everything goes well for you!
Hi Karen: Hope you don't mind my jumping in here but I need help also. My natural hair color is med brown between level 4 & 5. I've been getting it hilites and lowlites but now have too much gray so wanted an all over color for my base. I went to salon and she used 1/2 med blonde and 1/2 dark blonde and the result is too dark and it has a coppery kind of glow to it. Don't like it. I wanted a dark blonde color without red in it but not mousey. Can I do anything myself or should I go back to salon. If I do got back what can she do to get the color I want? Any suggestions appreciated. I've used clarifying shampoo to see if it will lighten but its not.
Thanks,
Karen

Hey! Laura, whatever u do, don't ever tell them u like it if u don't.Because when u do that, they for sure won't fix it.I'd try Artec Color shampoo & cond.U can oreder it online. They have all kinds of colors.I'd look online first & see what u like. It's a depostiing color. It only adds color to the shaft. They have pretty colors for brown hair.I'd try the Walnut color.Good luck! :)

Hey, Karen! I'd go back to her & tell her what u really wanted. That way she could fix it.If u try it at home u might make it worse.I have done that before & I was so sorry I didn't go back.I could understand not going back if she really messed it all up.By the sounds of it she could fix it.Just be firm on telling her on what u want. This is why people don't get their hair what tehy want.Becasue tehy r too scred to tell them.I'm far from that.Sometimes, u just have to tell it like it is.Good luck girl! :)

Hi Karen,
You really should have went back to the salon and asked them to lighten it a little. Are you sure they used dark and med blonde, because if you have asked for a dark blonde, and because you had hi lights and low lights they really should have used a 7 med blonde, as on hi lighted hair the 6 (dark blonde) would show up darker because it will grab onto the blonde in your hair.
I don't know how long ago you had your hair done, but there are 2 things you need to take into account, 1 you have had blonde hi lights in your hair, going all the one colour takes a few weeks to get use too. 2, your hair colour will fade a little in time, however,
If you want to lighten your hair yourself, you can use washing up liquid for a few washes, just remember to use plenty of conditioner after.
To remove the red, copper tones in your hair you need a colour with golden tones, this will cancel out any red tones.
