    Posted: June 16 2008 at 10:28pm
I just got low lights (dark auburn) and some blonde highlighted put into my dyed med blonde hair.  I just got it done last Monday.  A few days later my hair started fading.  I put sunscreen in my hair when I was out in the sun and wrapped my hair in a towel when I went to the tanning salon.

The girl that did my hair at the salon said it may fade, but didn't say it would fade in a week to where you cant notice in in parts.  She told me to come back in and we would redo the dark spots again.  Of course I'm assuming it's going to cost me all over again as well.

She mentioned doing a corrective color treatment that would cost 50.00 an hour and that it could take 4 hours to do.  I loved the dark color in my hair it was a perfect change, but not for the price of 75.00 for less than a week.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should do?  I could leave it, but I'm naturally a brunette and wanted to go back to being closer to my natural color but with a funky edge to it with the chunky highlights of a carmel color.  Do I change the coloring again or wait until I can afford a corrective color treatment?

Thanks for any help/advise you can give me.

Unless I am misunderstanding you, the problem is that your auburn parts are fading, not that the blonde highlights are changing tone, right?  It also sounds like you lightened your hair to blonde before doing the auburn lowlights and highlights - this is probably the bulk of your problem.  Once hair has been lightened its a lot more porous than it used to be.  Also, reds slide out of even non-porous hair super easy (then dark colors next).  So the mix of your hair being porous and your color choice over it being reddish and having small molecules is leading to your fading.

Nothing's going to stop it really.  She could try using a protein filler before redoing the auburn, but I'm not sure that's going to stop fading.  I would suggest that if you want to keep darker layers, don't lift those when you do the rest of your hair blonde, try to keep them out of it and let them go natural.  The natural haircolor will hold your auburn in a lot better.

Conditioning also helps reds slide out.  If you hair is relatively short, you could skip the conditioner and this would help (but if your hair is longer, you won't like that).

If I misunderstood you and your blonde highlights are what is losing its tone, (maybe going too yellow) that's because she used a toner on it and those just naturally fade.  I like to go over my white highlights with dye that has a violet base as a last step because its more permanant and you don't need toner, but whether or not you can do this will depend on how damaged your hair is.  Since you went from brunette, you may want to be more careful with it than that because it already got lightened a good deal to get it to blonde.  In that case, you may want to try toning the blonde parts by just using a violet shampoo.)

Hi,

I totally agree with Susan. To explain a little, I had a client who came into the salon about 6 weeks ago. She had bleached her whole head, at home and caused a lot of damaged to her hair. She went to a salon to go back to her natural colour and went for a dark blonde, however the salon never pre pigmented ( added a filler) so the colour faded within a week.

I pre pigmented (filler) her hair then applied a shade darker, but told her to still expect some fading, as it may take a couple of colour application, until the colour started to penetrate deeper into the medulla ( inner cortex) of her hair. She is booked in with me this Friday. She is aware that by bleaching her hair that is why its harder for her hair to grab on to the colour.

Kimberly you might need to go through this process a few times yourself.

If you want auburn color without damage you should check into Henna. this site is awesome: http://www.hennaforhair.com/forum/index.php?module=phpwsbb&PHPWSBB_MAN_OP=viewforum&PHPWS_MAN_ITEMS=4
The henna makes the hair much stronger, healthier and thicker afterwards and it gives different recipes to achieve the degree of color you want. Make sure to strand test, becaus henna is a permanent dye.
Good luck with your hair! :o)

I've had my hair lighted for about two years now.  My original color is dark brown.  With lightening and lighter highlights over the years my hair is now a med/dark blonde.  My hair has had some breakage due to the last partial highlight ( 8 weeks ago).  I just wanted to get a really lively brown with a hint of red in it, but then also keep some of the highlights but make them more of a carmel color.  I have Graves Disease (thyroid condition) that when my thyroid is out of wack my hair tends to pay the price.  Am I better off going with a medium brown and keeping some of the blonde highlights?  Most of the red/wine with hint of brown streaks are faded more at the ends then the top but they are definitely lighter all over.  I just bought Pureology shampoo and conditioner to see if that would help stop the fading but it almost seems to have made my hair have a reddish tint all over.  My goodness what is a girl to do?  I just want something different and more edgy then I've ever done.  I'm 39 turning 40 in Sept.  I look young for my age (most people say I look 25) so I want to do something funky before I'm really too old to have fun with it.  Thank you all for your advice.  I need all I can get.  I have an appt for next Monday so I'm open to any suggestions.  Thanks Everyone

I would say so. Red (as the previous posters noted) is difficult to maintain; fades sooooo fast! if you are up for the task of keeping the red and dying or toning every month then go for it. If you want less maintenance, then go for the blonde highlights. You can even try out different toners (non damaging ones) on the blonde each month to see what you like.

You go girl!!!LOL  I know what you mean. Have fun with your hair. Remember you can do a lot with highlights --- there's peek-a-boo highlights, block colouring -- to make your hair funky without the pain of high maintenance. Also, get into doing protein/conditioning treatments for your hair. When your hair is healthy, it keep the colour in a lot better. Smile

I know what u guys mean by red fading the fastest.I color mine red & it's alot to keep up with, but it's way less damaging than blonde.HAve u heard of Artec Color? It's a deposting shampoo & cond. They work great.I have been using them for years.U can order them online. They have some really kickass colors.I went from dark auburn hair to lighter auburn. If u have dark auburn, u could use the Cherry Bark one.I love them. All I do now is use Natural Instincts on my hair,so it's not damaging my hair so much.Just take a look online for Artec Color. It rocks!! Red is the hottest color I think.I get more attention than I did with blonde.
