I use Redken spray starch. Then, I curl up with a curling iron and use some hair spray.

Use a professional curling iron, one this has a heating level. Usually they range from about 1-12 and above, my hair is thick as well and I have to use something that is hot. Also hair wax works awesome for flipping your hair, it`s sold from just about any professional line of hair products. good luck!

my hairdresser said to turn your arm at a complete 90 degree angle to flip your hair up with a curling iron. If it`s not a 90 degree angle, the flip will have a feathered look....hope this helps
