My natural color is brunette, but for 5 years I have gone light blonde with lowlights of level 8.  Since my new growth is black, it is getting to be a hassle to maintain.  What I want to do is put level 7 medium blonde to dark blonde lowlights.  I have tried to put color in, but will not last and either will a toner.  My hair is long, but on the scalp it is very light blonde and ends are a medium ash blonde.  I also have some brassyness.  I was told I needed to deposit red color with 10 volume first and then after that put my level 7 on with 20 volume.  Then I was thinking maybe I will do all over color of dark blonde and see what happens.  I have worked hard to get this blonde.  Is it better to put chunks of lowlights or to do all over color and then pull highlights through.

Thanks

Denmark, I hope I'm not too late to reply!

It sounds like you would like to go slightly more dark? Because if your lowlights are already Level 8, going to a Level 7 is not that much darker. Now, if you want to ADD more lowlights at a Level 7, it will look a bit darker.

PLEASE don't colour all of your hair and THEN do highlights over it. Some hair stylists do this, but it's terrible for the hair. You are bleaching over bleach! I would suggest you really look at your hair (maybe in a picture) and decide where exactly you want to add the dark. Start slow with just a few lowlights at a level 7. If you want to turn some of your very light blonde pieces dark, then you should put a strawberry blonde colour or golden blonde colour on first (as a filler), then go with the colour you want to see (Level 7). If you don't do this, your hair will likely go drab (grey-ish) and waaaay too dark.

Remember, you are used to seeing yourself blonde --- don't do anything too drastic in going dark. You will see black! Then you will only damage your hair more by trying to lighten it up again.
Love clip-ins and tape!

Thanks so much!  You are soooo right about seeing myself blonde.  What I did was first added a filler (red), then I put in level 7.  At the end of it I felt there was a hint of red ifor my color,  but I hope as time goes on with washing, it will fade and my blonde will shine through.  Question?  I have an idea to get definition, I would do lowlights using a darker shade of brown.  No more bleach for this head!!!  I do miss the light blonde hair.  What I really want is to be a dark blonde all over color with light blonde highlights.  Again thanks

You are so welcome and it sounds like you knew what you were doing!!Big%20smile

If you start to see more red, just apply the Level 7 again (hopefully it's deposit-only colour). It will start to hold after awhile.

If you want to be dark blonde with light blonde highlights, I think you're on the right track. Using a darker brown colour for lowlights is a great idea & pretty easy to maintain. It's hard to maintain dark blonde though --- tends to go brassy. Now, I can't remember what your natural level is again, but if you have to lighten to dark blonde, it's almost impossible! it's an ashy colour. Most people lift warm, actually ALL people lift warm, so you would need a lot of ash to counter the orange that would come out.

Sorry for the confusing answer!Smile
