QuoteReplyTopic: How many LOCS is Normal?? Posted: July 06 2008 at 2:30am
I just had hairlocs for the 1st time and it feels like they are almost covering my head. Is this normal? I had 200 strands attached. I have never had extensions before. They are very uncomfortable, tight, sensitive to touch in some places, and not really well covered (placed up high) as I have fine/thin hair. I am afraid if the wind blows the locs will be obvious.
How long will they stay this uncomfortable? They are also all around my ears (very painful and impossible with sunglasses etc) I asked my stylist to move these, but she wants to wait a few days and see if I get used to it??
I paid a fortune for these- now I am wondering if I made a huge mistake.
i dont necessarily think you made a mistake. i feel your stylist should accomidate you and fix your hair. it should not be so high up that u can see it anywhere, and it shouldnt "hurt" you that much. its prob pulling on your own hair. are your sections neat and even, meaning that there are no hairs from the sides of locs where it could be pulling?
where did u end up going anyway?
i would call her and tell her you need them fixed.

When I put locs in, I put them about 1/4 inch down so they are more comfortable and less noticeable. Sounds like whoever did your hair put them right against your scalp, which may be the norm? I dont' know I've always done them myself. I found them to be uncomfortable for maybe a day or two and then fine, The ones around my ears did bother me sometimes with sunglasses. Be careful putting your glasses on and not to rip one out, I've almost had that happen a few times. Ouch.
I have fine/thin hair and I typically do about 150-200 locs, some people do more, but I don't have as much hair as most lucky people do!

Thanks for the replies. I have alled her twice so far. She keeps wanting me to wait and get used to them. I agree with what you both said- they are almost RIGHT NEXT TO MY SCALP ESPECAILLY AROUND MY EARS, IN FRONT OF EARS NEAR TEMPLES - AND I AM THINNNING THERE TO BEGIN WITH - It feels like little bald spots right next to them.
And you are right - no matter how I try to put my glasses on it is OUCH!!!!!!!!!
Is it possible this is also just too much hair for me? I have decent but fine/thin hair on top and then VAVOOM I have this massive thick hair cascading down my back- it just doesnt look right. Plus as I said, she didnt layer any of it except to angle the sides just a bit - so I have this massive hair just kind of hanging. The pny tail is huge and it take 2 holders to "keep it up". Its been so hot here that I got this HUGE claw clip to try to keep it off my neck but even that as falling with the weight of it.
I am wondering if 150 strands wouldnt have been better- cant I get a decent look with that much- it was her orignal estimate.
I dont mean to sound like people are out for themselves, but do sometimes stylists put in more hair to make more money? At 10 a strand it was another 500 bucks.
Also, can they just remove the ones (or most of them around the ears ) or will it look dumb.
ALSO I AM REALLY WORRIED WITH ALL THIS PAIN AND PULLING/TENSION IF MY OWN HAIR IS TAKING A BEATING - I WENT WITH HAIRLOCS BECAUSE I WAS ASSURED THERE WOULD BE NO DAMAGE - I DO NOT WANT TO END UP WITH BALD PATCHED OR HAVE A LOT OF MY OWN HAIR LOST.
hopefully she is skilled and experienced at doing them. yes you prob would of been fine with 150 strands- dont know though, i havent seen your hair. as a stylists myself, i do not add more hair just to make more money i am sure she didnt either. maybe she felt you needed that much. it should deff be layed and blended.
the ones around the ears can be removed with no prob. again, without seeing the placement.
i would call her again and tell her your concerns ...

I agree, it sounds like you would be FINE with 150, I am.
I would go have the ones fixed around your ears, if she puts them down a little bit, like 1/4 inch, it won't hurt when you wear glasses, but you still have to be carefull putting glasses on and not yanking them out. I wear glasses and sunglasses and always have to be weary of my links right there.

Do you have a HUGE ponytail with 150? I had to go buy those HUGE claw clips etc just to find something to keep my hair up and even that falls down.
PLUS it is still SO uncomfortable sleeping -how do you get used to it? Evey position there are 20 things sticking into my head - it HURTS!!
I really dont want to ever use glue in my hair- but I am just not sure I can tolerate this for months (or weeks) ( or days...!!)
Can I send you guys a picture without posting it on here (in case she sees) so you can tell me what you think> I think it is too muchhair and looks fakey.

It really sounds like your stylist did a bad job. I've never really experienced "pain', just a mild discomfort the first night getting used to them, it sounds like they are pulling your skin and digging into you, which they should NOT do.
I have some other ideas, I'll put them in email.
As far as washing, I use a clarifying shampoo (Nexus Aloe-Rid) on the top of my head (my hair) and then let it rinse out through the extensions, but I don't scrub any shampoo IN the extensions, and then I condition them, I think I'm using Pantene ProV blonde expressions and rinsing the conditioner out with distilled water.
Have you thought about adjusting the links yourself?
I have had hair extensions for about a month. I felt a little pulling the first few days, but they feel great now. I have really fine hair too, but my stylist layered my hair and used about 150 locs and it looks great.
Hound your stylist to correct the extensions. You paid really good money for them and she should honor your request.
