QuoteReplyTopic: Hating on this Black Hair Posted: July 22 2008 at 10:29am
I have been dying my hair black after many years of blonde highlights.
Now I am so tired of the black. So I have read through the forums and have seen many posts about removing the black color and quite frankly I am a little nervous. I do not want to go back blonde, my natural color is a medium brown. I would like to achieve a pretty caramel color.
I just want to know what is the safest way to remove this color and what should I do to achieve a caramel color.
If someone could tell me what I can buy at Salley's to achieve this.
My neighbors who are stylist suggested lightening my hair with lemon juice, but I have read frightening stories of people who had black hair and did this? Any comments?
My main concern is damage control-I don't want to fry my hair. I have baby fine hair as it is.
My goal is to have a nice caramel color but maybe leave a darker color underneath.
Any tips would be very greatly appreciated.

Oh boy! Well, I must tell you first that you will damage your hair, but it may not FRY your hair! Any kind of colour removing and lightening on ANY hair will be damaging.
Now, from Sally's I would pick up a colour remover, like Colour Oops. Hopefully, you were using permanent black dye on your hair and not semi-permanent, because, believe-it-or-not, semi is harder to get out! Before you use the colour remover, wash your hair several times with a clarifying shampoo or Dawn dishsoap to remove as much colour as you can beforehand.
After you have colour removed, you should be at blonde or golden blonde because it will take you back to the level you had before you went black. From there, you should be able to get a caramel with a neutral blonde or golden blonde hair colour because your hair will be porous. It will want to go darker then the colour you put on it. So, stay lighter than you think you want to go.
I would suggest you try all of this, first, on a piece of hair on your head --- strand test, so you know if it will work and how long it will take. The black will be hard to remove --- you may have to go to bleach if the colour remover doesn't work. Good luck!
I would also add that you should was the color remover out thoroughly... at least 3 times. The dye molecules break up but do not disappear. If it is not washed enough, the new color will be much, much darker than you want. Also, a protein treatment after using the color remover but before recoloring will help minimize damage. Good luck with this. It can sometimes be a gradual process. My son's girlfriend is doing this now. She has colored it black for a couple of years, so it is pretty well embedded into her hair. We are more conderned with keeping her hair healthy than doing it all at once.
Beauty is on the head of the appointment keeper.
