QuoteReplyTopic: Ends of Hair will not take hair color Posted: July 26 2008 at 3:53pm
I color my own hair in golden red and strawberry blonde shades. The ends of my hair (about 5") will not take the color. The crown will take color, but the ends remain a light shade and will not color (or only color slightly). What can I do to get by whole head to take one color? I have been using Claroil Nice and Easy and NATURAL INSTINCTS.
Thanks for help and advice.
I'd assume that your ends are more porous because they've been dyed more times. Usually ends absorb too much pigment though, then it washes out faster than it does in the rest of the hair. Its unusual that it won't take.
Are you using a heavy silicone conditioner? Maybe that is interfering with your dye if you are. (Any words in the ingredients that end in cone or one are silicones, the higher up they are in the ingredients the more there is). If that is your problem, you could clarify your hair with a clarifying shampoo to remove buildup before you dye it, use a no cone conditioner after you clarify, then wait a day or two before dyeing it so your scalp can build up some protective oil first. Your hair will be very dry after clarifying, you may want to plan to wear it up so it doesn't get tangled in that day or two before you dye it, then dye it, and condition it really well afterwards (you can use your silicone stuff again after).
If its not conditioner build up, and its porosity, you could try a protein filler on the ends, but there's no guarantee this won't make it look uneven because of the line where you put the filler. You could test strand it to see.
Another trick to try is doing your ends first and leaving the dye on for longer, then doing your upper hair last. I would test strand each thing and see what you get though, don't try all these at once. Hope something helps.

Thanks Susan for taking the time to answer my problem.....I see why you are an elite member! Yes, you hit it on the nail....the ends of my hair are VERY porous. I use the conditioner that comes with the Natural Instincts or any other color package that I use. Of course, there are no ingredients listed, but that is something I can check whenever I use another conditioner. I have used a clarifying shampoo before coloring and that did not work either. I cannot cut of the bad ends off as that is the predominate part of my hair....in that I wear it necklength and that 5" would take off most of my hair...and I can't wear it that short! I will try the protein, but don't know for what to ask....I can go to Sally's.
THANK YOU SO MUCH! You are a doll!

Yeah, I think Susan W.'s advice is spot on! Your ends sound porous. A little tip: try spraying a light leave-in spray on your ends before you colour. This will help the colour to 'grab' on and stay.
Also, I would advice to do a lot of deep conditioning leading up to your colour day. If your hair sucks in more moisture you will even out your porosity; good luck!
Love clip-ins and tape!

fakeizme,
Love your name....sounds like me...everything is fake! HA!
Thanks for the tip...really do appreciate your input. I'll look for something as I normally do not use any leaveins as my hair is fine and the least little thing pulls it down. I suppose I could find something at Sallys...do you have a product particularly in mind? But before a color job, I can do that and hope it does the trick also. What a GREAT forum...I should be back to normal soon with such caring advice.
THANKS!

Ha! Someone understands/associates with my fakeness! Awesome.
I know what you mean about leave-ins weighing your hair down. I would suggest though, that you start using some type of light leave-in like Infusium 23 or Garnier Fructis long & strong (I think it's called?) ALL the time. One of the reasons your hair is so porous is because you are avoiding conditioners on your fine hair. Everyone needs some type of additional moisture on their hair, especially if they are coloured. You just need a dab. Just on the ends.
I hope everything works out for you. I love this board too!!!
