I've got a couple of questions for those of you who use mayonnaise as a deep conditioner. First of all, do you feel like using homemade mayonnaise--without the spices, of course!--is better for your hair than using store-bought? And second, do you put the mayonnaise on your scalp as well as the rest of your hair, or do you just put it from the ears down, like you would with conditioner?

I can only tell you what I've tried. I did use it on all of my hair, including scalp, and I haven't tried homemade. I have heard from others that leaving it on for an hour was better than cutting the time short, but I didn't experiment with that. Let us know how it goes!

I don't know how to make mayo, or I might try it. I do put it from scalp to tips, never tried doing just the length. Any deep treatment I do goes on the whole thing.
As for what Susan said about leaving it on an hour.... I'd say an hour is good. I recently tried leaving it on all day like I do an olive oil treatment. Bad idea.
Well, I tried it out this morning. I didn't have a full cup of olive oil, which is what the mayonnaise recipe called for, so I used about half a cup of coconut oil, olive oil, and some jojoba oil. I still came up a little bit short of a cup, but went with it anyway. I shampooed the length of my hair before I put the mayonnaise on, because I still had some jojoba oil in my hair from the last time I'd washed it, and I thought it would probably be good to get that out of there first. So, my hair was wet when I put the mayo on... I don't even know if most people put it on dry hair or not! Then, I piled my hair up on top of my head and wrapped my head with plastic wrap because I don't have a shower cap yet. Then I soaked a towel in hot water, wrung it out, wrapped it around my head, and then wrapped a dry towel over that. I only left it in for about half an hour because that was all the time I had. My hair didn't feel as soft and moisturized as I had hoped when I rinsed it out and then shampooed... but I put on a bunch of conditioner with a few drops of rosemary oil mixed in, and my hair isn't dry yet, so we'll see how it feels by then. I think if I try the mayo again I'll leave it in for the full hour and see if that makes a difference.

I always used damp hair. I'd wet it slightly, then bun it and wait awhile for it to absorb the water somewhat, then do the mayo. I can't imagine using it on dry hair is bad though, or works any less well. Sometimes I did mayo after clarifying the wash before, making sure there was no silicone coat in the way.

It felt kind of... poofy. Not dry or anything, but very big. But I actually think that it felt better after the second wash after the mayo. I've really liked my hair since then. It's nice and soft and shiny, and has lots of body (which isn't exactly unusual for my hair, lol!) and seems to be all the better for the mayo treatment. It just took another wash to get the full effect, I think.

I tried it just last night for the first time, strangely enough. I put it from scalp to tips, and left it in for an hour or more. I rinsed it well, and shampooed. I let it dry, and I noticed that though it was soft, it would get greasy very fast. I guess I hadn't rinsed enough? Anyway, the next day (this morning), after my usual wash, I'm left with hair that's never been so soft, and has a lovely healthy shine. I'm really surprised and shocked. I'll probably do the mayo treatment every couple of weeks, or once a month.
Trying to grow out layers for a more matched, and uniformed style :D
