You have been so informative - thank you for all your advice! My plan is to wait a couple of months to see how the fading looks and get it done then! I will make sure that the person who does it has done similar corrections before!

Yeah, it's a great idea to let the colour fade out a bit --- that will really help down the road when you go back.
When I say 'potential disaster' I mean what could and may happen. Like, if they do a colour remover (which they should do) and it's not done properly, it will go back dark. Then it has to be done ALL over again. Actually, that is not so bad because colour removers are generally non-damaging.
The real nasty turn could happen when they go to do your roots (bleach). It will likely lighten fast. IF they don't watch it, it could go white. Also, they will have to put bleach on your midshaft and ends to even everything up, but it may not get up as light as your roots! In fact, they should do that part FIRST, then do your roots so they can match up everything.
I think the problem is, IF! Someone who is confident and knows what they are doing and CARES about your hair, won't let any of this happen. I would ask them questions before you get it done, so you know they are on the same page with you. Good luck with everything!

thank you for your reply. I guess I will wait for a few months to see how the color fades out before getting the process done. When you say 'potential disaster' - what to you think could happen? What would be the worst case scenario? Thank you so much in advance.

Actually, you may be in luck with the demi-permanent. I think your stylist should be able to do a colour remover like Pravanna or Erase for oxidative dyes. This would be non-damaging and take you right back to where you were before you went darker. the only problem is the layering of colour that you have had done. It could be difficult to remove in one sitting and it will no doubtedly require some bleaching. Once the colour is removed, they will still have to bleach your roots to where you want them and make sure the blonde is even throughout. It's definitely a corrective process and some stylists shiver at the potential disaster! Find someone who is comfortable with corrective color. It's possible, but may take more than two visits! Good luck!

Hi, this is my first post here. I hope you can help and forgive me if this has been posted before.
For many years I highlighted my hair to a light blonde color and then decided to do the all over blonde thing - that was a mistake as the colorist who did it did not tone my hair and it ended up a lovely brassy orange shade. I found a new stylist at an Aveda salon and she did my roots for me and toned my hair and it was better but my hair was just past my shoulders and very damaged from all the processing. I decided then to have her do the Aveda demi-permanent color to take my hair a bit darker than my natural color - to a chocolate brown shade. I have had this done three times now - it restored shine and condition to my hair and I also had several inches chopped off that were very damaged.
Now my dilema is - I want to go blonde again - perhaps to a platinum shade or very light blonde. How hard would this be to achieve on my hair? I understand that dark color is hard to remove, but my color is demi-permanent and not permanent - does this matter? How damaging would the coloring process be to my hair?
