QuoteReplyTopic: can I color 1 shade lighter in single process? Posted: August 19 2008 at 1:01pm
My hair is a level 5 brown, I want to paint in some highlights (as discussed in my other thread). I tried some level 6 (Light ash brown) just on my bangs and it did...nothing.
Is this impossible to acheive with the 20% volume developer that comes in the box? Do I need to go someplace like Sally's to get a 40%? If so, can I use it with the box color, or do I need to do some kind of double process (bleach, then add the color?)
I don't want blonde highlights, just lighter brown, very subtle. I thought it would be simple.
My hair isn't as dark as it looks here, it's really a typical medium ash brown.

Elissa, I can't remember if your hair is coloured a Level 5? If it is you will need to bleach. If it's not, then I would try going several levels up in boxed hair colour, like a Level 8/9 blonde for your highlights. I used to do this with my natural dark hair years ago when I wanted subtle copperish highlights. It worked really well. Use it with the 20 vol. they give you in the box. You should not need a higher leve of peroxide. Also, use an ash blonde to lift; it will prevent brassiness.
I totally agree with Fakeizme- There is no reason why you should have to use vol 40 peroxide or bleach to do what you want. In fact, I would strong counsel against it. I have lightened my hair for years, and the general rule is try the gentlest methods first..like choosing a lighter permanent color in a box. Especially if you just want a subtle result. Just be sure to counteract the reddish/yellow undertones with an ash color if you don't want too much warmth, as Fakeizme pointed out.
Sounds like the color was too close to your own level. I think the colors on the boxes can be very misleading sometimes. And different brands like L'Oreal and Clairol seem to differ up to a whole level in comparison at times ( for example). I had a similar problem, used a color that was supposedly a couple of levels higher but did NOTHING. It's very frustrating at times.
I am right now sitting with bleach in my hair! I decided to give Loreal Couleur Experte a try, since it's offered in my exact desired shade...Med ash brown with lighter ash highlights. I skipped step one since I just colored my roots last week.
I hope I know what I am doing because this is BLUE BLEACH! I figure at the worst I can always just deposit some demi-brown over the highlights if I don't like them.
Stay tuned!

HEY! How did it go?? *Idk why (forgive me so embarrassed to say but...I keep thinking you resemble a youthful debra winger! *her before 83 *look alike... You can rinse or use a cloth to view the color underneath & just apply it again until it is the shade you wish for. You can put a beautiful carmel gloss over top maybe...so many options...
