...HOW do you get the oil evenly distributed through your hair??? I just end up with greasy clumps, and the oil hasn't even touched the rest of my hair! What am I missing here?!

first, length & thickness must be considered. collar-bone length & longer at least half a cup of olive oil for fine to med. thickness. a full cup for brazziere length & longer, for med. to thick hair.
1. heat the correct amount of oil on the stove top until it barely starts to boil. transfer to a coffee cup. take into bathroom & set it on the counter within reaching distance from the shower, or make suitable arrangements.
2. shampoo hair & rinse w/hot water, towel off but leave the hair moist.
3.dip 4 fingers into cup of oil & glaze your hands & apply to the ends first, working in steps, more glazing the hands & working to within 3 inches of your scalp.( you don't need any oil near the scalp since your natural sebaceous oils will take care of your scalp & the first 3 inches of your hair)
4.put all your hair into a shower cap & let it sit for 5-10 min. take off cap & let your hair cool for the same amount of time you had it in the bag.
5. shampoo out once only! no need to condition. yes, your hair will still have a slightly oily feel for the next day, mabye two, but its okay, its very important that you don't over shampoo(frequency) your hair. you could strip away the essential vitamins that the hair is still soaking up. you might want to sleep with a shower cap the first night or use an old pillow. continue with daily shampoo & conditioning the next day. make sure to use a Nexxus shampoo (Botanoil is designed for curly-nappy hair), they are one of the last companys to still keep the ph level sustained @ 4.5-5.5. stay away from ANYTHING using the words "all-natural/botanicals/natural extracts, essences" as they will ALL leave a residue that is too acidic for the hair/scalp, that will eventually dry your scalp & hair even more. if you can find a representative from the japanese beauty company "NOEVIR", get thier shampoo & conditioner..best in the world!
selfishness/greed & vanity makes the U.S.A. go round & round.

I just started oiling with olive oil and I love it!
I wet my hair first and towel dry it as much as possible. Then I split my hair into 4 sections and ponytail them while I work on one section at a time. I'll rub the oil into my hands and then sandwich the hair with my hands and slide them down the hair shaft a few times. I'll get more oil and rub through my fingers and finger comb my hair until it's evenly coated.
That's how I do mine. What kind of oil are you using?
I spread the oil on my hair by rubbing my hands downward, then I brush it to distribute (I have an old plastic brush with lots of bristles, the oil kind of sticks to it).

So far I've used coconut oil and jojoba. I only tried it a few times, though, because I couldn't seem to get it evenly distributed and ended up with greasy clumps. Now I'd kind of like to get away from using any store-bought conditioners, if I can, so I need to figure out this oiling thing!
Separating the hair into sections is a good idea. I was just trying to do the whole thing at once and it was kind of like brushing a thick-coated dog--I only got the top layer!
Hairbraider, I'm talking about a daily oiling. Well, I actually would probably only do it every other day, when I wash my hair.
Susan, I have a brush that's kind of like a boar-bristle only the bristles are plastic, but since I quit using a brush and only use my ox-horn comb, I started using the brush to brush my bedroom carpet before I vacuum so the long hairs don't kill the vacuum! I don't think I want to use it on my hair now, or at least not until after a good wash!

Ok, just wanted to clarify. For daily oiling you don't need very much oil at all, a few drops. Also, many people just apply it to the last few inches. For deep conditioning you need alot more and it's necessary to wash it out afterwards.
Unfortunately, my hair never responded well to daily oiling. It gets crunchy and nasty feeling.
I oil on the days I wash my hair. When my hair is wet, I part the back and bring hair to both sides in front. I only use 1 drop of jojoba oil, rub it in my hands, then rub my hands on sides and ends of my hair only. Then I comb my hair and let air dry.
Once a month, I do a heavy over night oiling with coconut oil. I have had amazing results with that.

Mines hasn't like oiling, either, but SusanW suggested mixing the oil with shea butter, so I'd like to try that!
From everybody's replies, I think I've been using too much oil, and that's another reason why I ended up with greasy clumps. Next time, I'll use less!
Thanks everybody!
