QuoteReplyTopic: How to make my baby's hair black again? Posted: October 14 2008 at 5:14pm
Hi everyone,
Im new here and i have a question. I'm an african woman (and so is my hubby). My little girl is 2 months old. She is very fair-skinned (like me) and was born with black hair. After about 10 days, her hair started turning brown and its getting browner/lighter by the day. I want to know if there is any safe hair cream that i can use to make her hair black again. i dont intend to dye her hair..i just wondered if there is any natural cream that can naturally restore her hair to black. her hair looks really strange, seeing that she is a full african child.
Also, if i use it now, will have to continue using on her FOREVER??
I have a 5 month old, and older daughter who is 4 yrs old. I can tell you that their hair changes in infancy quite a bit...from birth to your daughter's age, and then in the later months (6, 7, 8 etc.) The color changes (usually not radically though) as well as the texture and amount of curl. I am caucasion with no experience at all with African hair, but I would assume the same happens w/African hair. So I would just roll with it and wait and see what happens. There really isn't a chemical out there that I would use to change a baby's hair color, nor do I know of anything natural that I'd bother my baby with over something cosmetic.
FWIW, my baby looks strange too. She's got bald spots all over her head, alternating with spots that have thick hair. what are you gonna do, right?
Thanks Elissa. You are so right. i just have to wait and see, hey. one thing though, i decided to stop washing her hair everyday with shampoo. I use the aqueous cream that i bath her with on her hair too, and amazingly, the hair is looking better and darker? you reckon it could have been the shampoo (i use the Elizabeth Anne's baby shampoo. its the same one i used on my 1st DD and i had no probs with it then)
Oh well, i guess i'll just watch and see. Thanks a lot for taking time to reply.
Hi, I think in general the rule is to stay away from coloring baby hair. Their hair is so fine and fragile, and you certainly don't want to irritate their scalp. However, I am a big believer in natural solutions, so I might suggest using old coffee grounds mixed in with her shampoo. Leave it on her hair a few minutes, then wash out. The dark brown/black will just stain the hair. It will not hurt your baby at all. I used coffee grounds a lot when I was brunette.
Worse thing that can happen ? Might not make much difference, or make it dark enough. Like you said, not washing the hair every day can help. As well as staying out of the sun. I think babies get lightened hair easily in the sun.. :-)
