Hi guys,

After reading about cassia, I decided to order some samples of amla and cassia from Henna for Hair. It was very easy at $1 a sample, free shipping and it arrived only a week after ordering. Not bad considering it was the Christmas break and I live in Australia!

I am interested in the strengthening and the conditioning effects of cassia only. I tried out the cassia yesterday. I decided to test it out on actual hair (not on the canopy but underneath). The reason being is that I've got foils in my hair and I wanted to see if it changes the colour.

I did two mixes;
  • amla/cassia/water
  • cassia and water
I was advised against adding the amla but I'd already ordered the samples and decided to do the amla mix. I googled it and found out all sorts of good things about it. I experienced no problems with applying the cassia at all. It was easy to mix up and apply. It has a slight hay smell which I did not find to be all that bad at all (mind you, I only applied to two curls). It was very easy to wash out. I didn't even use conditioner.

The left hand side with the amla/cassia mix is definitely a lot thicker than the pure cassia. The pure cassia is good as well but the hair doesn't look as thick. However, the pure cassia looks darker than the other side which seems to have lightened up which I DON'T want. On greater reflection though and bringing down a few other curls, I think my hair is lighter than I originally thought. It just looks darker when I apply product to it. If you look at my progress pictures, my May colour was a lot lighter.

Condition wise, it feels very soft. I'm not having any of the dryness that others have experienced. I didn't even condition my hair afterwards. I just rinsed out the cassia in cold water. My hair smells slightly of hay and I've got a craving for carrots (just a horse joke haha) but it's all good. The curls look great.

Overall ... it's a great success. It turned out much better than expected and I recommend anyone thinking about cassia to get some $1 samples (free shipping) from Henna for Hair.  I just thought I'd let you guys know my experience in case anyone is thinking of trying it.

Thanks for the info! I've wondered about cassia myself. Are you going to do your whole head now? And, yes, I did notice your hair is much darker now.

Cassia just washes out? I am growing out hair dye, so it might be something I want to try. Where did you get the $1 sample from?

My friend lives in the US and is returning to Australia at the end of January so I'm going to order some cassia and alma and have it delivered to her so she can bring it back with her.

Apparently it does wash out and doesn't have the permanent effects of henna. I am planning to do a cassia treatment every month.

I got the cassia from here - http://www.hennaforhair.com/ The samples were a $1 for 6 grams with free shipping. It was standard shipping but I got mine in a week which I thought was very good for international post. Make sure you do a strand test as apparently cassia which isn't as good quality can contain metallic salts which can be very damaging if you have chemical colour in your hair.

I know I'm paying more for this brand but I've worked so hard on growing my hair and I'd rather pay for quality rather than risk using someone that wasn't as good and potentially damaging to your hair.

I suggest trying the cassia only as you have no need to enhance curls and report back!

One week shipping is great! And free, worth trying anyways.

Keep us posted when you do your whole head!

Yes, I'll post an update! I like the fact that cassia is not permanent like henna.

Will the cassia lighten, or darken your hair? Do you just use it to conditon your hair? You said it's not recommended for color treated hair?

I didn't say that it wasn't recommended for chemically treated hair. I have chemically treated hair. I said that you need to be very careful with the cassia you use and do a strand test as the cassia can contain metallic salts if it is bad quality and that type of cassia can be very damaging to people with chemically treated hair. I hope that's clearer Smile I just use it for the conditioning and strengthening aspects. Apparently it doesn't lighten your hair but some blondes use it to cover their greys. I'm not sure as that aspect doesn't particularly affect me as my hair is quite dark.

Ah, ok. Thanks for clearing that up.

Yeah, I know one girl at TLHC used cassia on her all white hair and it turned blonde. I'll be watching to see what it does to your dark hair.

Good luck!
