QuoteReplyTopic: Please help!! Hair appt is soon .. Blonde advice!! Posted: April 07 2009 at 2:55pm
Hi Ladies..
Sorry that is about my 4th post here but I really haven't been able to get the answer I'm looking for. Blah!!
My natural hair color is dark brown but not black dark brown just dark brown. I was platinum in the past but it was far too damaging and I had a salon leave it on WAY too long snapping my hair. Long story short, I dyed my hair back to dark. Did a few dye jobs followed by a series of dark glazes. My hair is now very nice and healthy again. Thank goodness! I went back to dark in I believe November 2006.
Now I have been doing highlights to lighten my hair. Only a few sessions so it isn't perfect or even close.
I have a hair appt on Fri and I'm torn between what to do or even tell my haridresser. This is a new girl for me as my old girl is on maternity leave.
I hate how when I get the highlights it leaves my hair all different colors. I know I'm in a process right now but I really want to lighten my ends up!! I'm trying to figure out how I can do this. Or what I can just tell my hairdresser to help me along with the process. The other thing I also hate is how just the toner is what is lighting the rest of the dark left after the highlights. It often leaves it a not so wonderful, not really blonde color.
I'd much rather just have to go back for roots after it's light enough rather than to keep lighting the already light hair.
I think you're going to have difficulty achieving a color similar to that through highlighting. You may eventually get close to it on your ends, but your roots will never quite match up. That's why it's always best to stick with colors closer to your natural color. Otherwise, it will be a ton of upkeep and I can see you being dissatisfied with your roots. However, if you insist on going that light, you'd probably be better off with an all over light color and then adding your lowlights to that. I really don't recommend that, though. Especially considering your experience in the past.

I'm a blonde at heart so I could never be my natural color or even close ever again, hehe. I had very light hair achieved through highlighting but it was never even which is more of what I want.
I'm not so much dissatisfied with my roots as I expect them, I just wish I could back and have just them done. Why don't you rec an all over color? It was always my guess that, that just wouldn't work for me anyway?
Thanks for your advice I look forward to reading your reply!

The only way to get rid of colour build up is bleach or colour removers.
Does you hairdresser use foils or mesh, if so ask her/him to apply either 30 or 40 vol to the darker mid lengths and ends and a 20 vol to the root area, then apply a very light ash blonde to cancel out any underlying warm tone. It will be a slow process to get to your photo of you above(which is lovely by the way) but Rome wasn't built in a day, lol. The best way is to keep getting the hi lites and the root area only after this visit.
Hope this helps a little,
Karen :)

Well that is really depending on the condition of your hair, and your hairdresser should assess this. If your hair can withstand the 30 or 40 vol once then this can be done.
Good luck, Karen.

The only reason I don't recommend the all over hair color is because of your experience with damage in the past. It is the best way to achieve what you're looking for though. And because you've had so many chemical processes towards your ends, I would watch out for those high level developers. My hair has been through so much, and I know from a lot of experience that I personally prefer to have healthy hair that isn't exactly the color I want rather than having an awesome color that has left my hair breaking off all over the place.

Blah, I just don't know!! My hair is all fresh now so it really hasn't had too many proceses done to it. Most of it were glazes which I did to help re-store my hair. I think the only reason why my hair became so damaged previously was because I was literally just doing 40 volume flat out bleach all over. I think that's usually damaging for most people? A lot of my hair has a very, very light look to it with just highlights. Almost platinum really. It suprised me but I think it's a mix of just the highlight itself and then the follow up with shimmer lights.
I'm wondering if there's someway I could just figure out a way to do my highlights but avoid it being overly two-toned and avoid all the gold tones all together. I'm not looking to be white white damaged, you know?
Ahhh!!!! I guess I'll just have to talk to the stylist and see what she thinks is best. I'm still dark in parts so I don't expect to achieve this color until after at least another 3-4 sessions.

I'm wondering if maybe they dye my roots, then highlight, and then tone I'll get a better more all over color after a few sessions. This way my roots are lighter rather than just putting the toner on dark, dark roots.

Your hairdresser is treating your highlighted roots with bleach/lightener, right?

I'm not sure? Sorry, I don't know too much about hair so excuse me if I sound silly, .
When I go for my hair all they do is give me either half a head or a full head of highlights with foil. After it's done processing they wash it out and put a toner on me. The toner is what lightens the rest of my dark roots that haven't been touched by the highlights.
Should they be doing something else? I'm up for all suggestions :).
