I posted this thread in the celebrity forum like last week but got no response so I'm posting it here.

Hey, I'm not sure how often you help guys with hairstyles, but I'm trying to change mine and need help, since I don't know much about hair. I have straight hair and I've been getting it permed short for about 7 years now. What's really bad is that this hairstyle looks really good on me as soon as it's done, but after a month half my hair is straight and half is curly and it gets even worse later. I think it's time for a change. Here is a picture of me about five years ago.

I searched all over the internet to find a style that I wanted and finally came across it. I found a bunch of pictures of Johnny Depp with the hairstyle. The thing was that it was a long hairstlye, and I've never had long hair before. Here are a couple good shots of the style...

And here is the page where I found these pictures. It was an event where he went on David Letterman. There's like 100 photos here...

This is what I wanted to go for, so I went to a hairstylist about six months after I had my last perm and showed her the pictures and asked what I should do. She told me that I have to wait and let it grow out even more. That was about three months ago. I just saw her again and she told me I might need about one more month before she can do the style.

Right now my hair is in the worst shape it's ever been. It looks absolutely disgusting to me, but that's because I have curly and straight hair combined. Here is what I currently look like...

Because it looks so horrible, I've had to put up with a lot of crap from my friends and family. They all wanted me to just cut it back down, but I just keep trying to focus on the end goal.

My reason for posting here is because I want to make sure I'm doing the right thing. I didn't come this far and deal with all the stress just to have a bad hairstylist who doesn't know what she's doing do it wrong and then I have to start growing it all over again.

I need to know what exactly I have to do in order to get this hairstyle from where I am right now. What exactly do I tell the stylist when I finally go in to get it done? She had told me that he had wavy hair in the pictures, so she might need to perm my hair again, which made me worried, because I don't know if that's what needs to be done or if she's guessing. I'm going to Hair Masters too, which is a chain store. Is that a bad move? Also, I'm not sure from the pictures what's done to the lower back and sides of the hair. The upper back and sides look straight/wavy, but the lower portion looks curly I think. I'm just not sure, since I'm not a stylist. Can anyone help me here?

This one is tough, this is the main reason I hate perms! They are great until they start growing out, plus they wreck your hair. I would recommend, going and getting the perm straightened out ( they usually comb perm solution through the hair). That way you won't have the straight regrowth with curty ends. It will even the texture out. Most celebrity styles are all about products too. I would say Johnny uses a texturizer and he gets his hair razored to have the shattered ends.

I was just checking the photos on that website again and found pictures of what this hair style looked like about 4 months before it grew out and I liked it better. I think my hair is also long enough to get it done now too. Here it is...

Somebody told me it's called a top heavy long layered cut, but is that right? Is that all I tell the hair dresser or is there more to it?
