I want to try installing glue tipped hair on myself. Is this something I should try doing? I have had it installed before, but it is so expensive and high maintenance, not to mention the upkeep. Anyone have any experience with D.I.Y.? If so, please share. Anyone know of any tutorials online? Any info is appreciated. [IMG]smileys/smiley1.gif" align="middle" />

HI!

welcome to the fabulous world of DIY! and yes I think it's a great idea to try it yourself because you can learn so much in the process.
I started out surfing the web for videos on how to put extensions in and ALL the different techniques before finally deciding on the method I wanted to use.
You can find videos on youtube of the extension websites as well as online tutorials that have pictures for each step as you go along. Just type in how to put in hair extensions into google and you will come up with tons of hits.
I use Doctored Locks to order alot of my supplies and i'm pretty sure they have tutorial videos on their website.
Deciding which method to use:
I didn't want all my hairs to be attached and unnatural so I crossed out the wefted/sewn in method.
I wanted my hair to flow freely and move like real hair did.
I didn't want a tight braid in the back of my head because you get a big bump of hair under your own and it is obvious there is something lurking underneath!
Also, you cant really put your hair in an updo very well with these methods.
I wanted versatility!

Finally it was between fusion/shrinkies and microlinks.
I decided on the microlinks method of hair install because I didn't want to glue my natural hair to anything as i hear the glue can be a pain to get out.

I ordered virgin indian hair offline and a microlinks starter kit from doctored locks and a month later I had long, thick hair down to my bellybutton!

I cut hair off a weft and then use a wand to melt keratin glue. I run the hair through the glue to coat it well, then roll it between silicone fingerpads to get the i tip shape. I wash the tips with shampoo and dry them right away and then let them sit for a few days before i use them to install with the microlinks. I wash the tips because I had a crazy allergic reaction the first time I put the hair in and i believe it was due to the keratin secreting some kind of chemical when it was melted down. Maybe some type of amines or something...not sure. anyway...

I do not suggest you use the keratin glue from doctored locks. When I ordered it i found it to be poor quality and fell apart quickly. I'm still trying to find the perfect glue or method of gluing my extensions together to keep the glue from breaking down so I can't help you there.

Last important thing. You cant really DI YOURSELF. you will definitely need the help of a friend to help you install the hair in the back of your head and then after you install all the hair to get a good haircut. you can't just install it and expect it to look great. persoanlly i think layered looks are the best for extensions because it blends it all together and makes it look thick and natural.

Good luck! Let me know what you choose and how your first at home install  goes!!
