How to get rid of bad hair?

Hello,
i am a bloke woth really bad hair. My hair is all pointy, especially from the sides which gives my face a round look, and i don`t like that. My question is, how to get the hair to stay close to the head? I use styling gel, but it does not look good when the hair is shiny from the sides? Is there perhaps some kind of hair therapy which would make the hair grow more close to the head? Any other ideas are appreciated as well, i dont wish to shave my head entirely though :)

Btw, its really difficult to find forums for men discussing about hair, so i dont know if i posted in the right forum :D
