redhead to ash brown?!?

Hi! I have cropped naturally red hair (yellowy/orange really) and im trying to go soft ash brown...ive tried a few methods but never really got convincing results..

Ive tried semi-perm, single process, double-process, bleaching then ash toner and got green hair!!
Can anyone suggest the best approach...should i be lightening to lift the red? should i just apply a ash color one level darker. Ive noticed coloring already colored hair can actually make things worse, is that right?

i'm looking to tone out the warmth but stay realistic...im not particuarly pale and have brown eyes so if i get it right it should work!
