QuoteReplyTopic: cornrow Sew in Weave - caucasian? Posted: June 05 2009 at 4:47pm
Hey guys,
i have damaged hair from overbleaching ( 5 times in a month) and it even started to break. Its got heaps better in the last month as ive been using salon products but i had to have it cut and now i feel like a walking scarecrow!
its still a frizzball in the mornings and the straightening is doing heaps more damage even thoughh i use a heat protection spray.
I really want extensions for more volume and a little bit of length and have been advised a cornrow sewn on weave would be ideal.
Microlinks would be unsuitable i have been told as my hair is very thin and fine anyway and more so because of the damage.
Problem is i cant find any info on the web about caucasians with weaves. Is this not the norm ?
i read that weaves arent suitable for caucasian hair ??.....
also do they damage your hair cos it is cornrowed all the time and surely it cant breathe or grow properly ??
is there anyone who is caucasian and has first hand experience of wearing a weave ?
Or just anyone , caucasian or not ,that can direct me to some photos of caucasian women wearing weaves or give me advice about the pros and cons of weaves ??
Hey Kitty Kate. I am caucasian and I had a weave done about 2 years ago for similar easons to you..my hair was also really damaged from overbleaching/straightening etc etc. The weave looked good for a bout 2 days and then cornrows started to slip and come loose resulting in the weave being really baggy and not stable atall. I think the reason for this was because my hair wasn't as course as afro hair and didn't hold the cornrows as afro hair does. Have u thought of glueing wefts in to ur hair??? Ive been using this method for years now and I find it very effective!!!. Hope this helps. Good luck mwah xoxo
I had read that this can happen and voiced my concerns to the hairdresser...im going to have a consultation with her and speak some more about it...so how do the glue in wefts work ?....does the glue damage your hair ?
I wouldnt be able to do it myself though as im hopeless with things like that....i cant even get clip ins right! lol :D
What kind of hair do you use ? I wanted to buy my own and was thinking russian would be best or is indian remy just as good ?
Do you have any pictures you can post of you wearing your wefts ?
Heya hun, just wanted to know ...when you had your weave done did they braid synthetic hair in with your own hair when they were doing the tracks ?
Im taking the plunge and getting mine done saturday and thats what they are going to do as she said my natural hair wouldnt be stable enough as its so fine.
Just wondered if maybe thats why yours slipped after 2 days ?
Im a little apprehensive but excited at the same time. It has to be better than my current state tho...im losing more hair by the day!!
Hey Kitty sorry for the late reply. I did have synth hair plated into my own hair when i had it weaved. The glue over time has damaged my hair and made it a bit finer but it holds well and if u remove it properly and not in a hurry like me im sure u could get less damage. There is a pic on the board of my recent instal with liquid gold and wefts so have a look- I buy remi hair in a light colour and colour it ginger to match my own and it lasts well. Hope the weave goes well and I would love to see pics. mwahh xoxo
I've read your concerns about the cornrow method, only lasting for a couple of days??
Hummm maybe the stylist didn't properly secure your cornrows with a needle and thread before she begin to sew your wefts onto your cornrow take a look at this picture to see the correct way to
I had 3 rows done and 3 wefts to shoulder length sewn in a week and 4 days ago now and although it looks and feels fabulous and ive had no soreness on the scalp etc, the rows, especially the one nearest my neck ,have started to become loose :(
Im not giving up hope just yet though as its not in the really really baggy stage and still looks fine but im juts worried it might fall off and be dangling from my head in a weeks time?!
I notice there are bits of thread going vertically joining each track together too so even if it does get real loose will these bits of thread still hold it do you think ? I had synthetic hair braided in too but i do have baby fine hair.
I have only had it washed once so far and that was at the salon .....im too scared to touch it myself in case i mess it all up.....i mean the lady dried the hair first with the hairdryer then exposed the tracks and put me under the dryer for around 35 minutes......so im thinking its gonna take me ages to do it myself. at night i put it up in a satin cap.
i just didnt expect it to get this loose so soon.....not even two weeks :/
^^^I'm sorry but I just had to come out of lurk mode to respond to this last post. I don't know why stylists advise against glue-in extensions. If you install them properly and remove them properly, you will rarely have any problems. I currently wear tape and glue and my hair is growing better than ever. Maybe using the black weave glue isn't the best, but still if you use it right, it shouldn't be a problem.
Also, sew-ins CAN damage the hair. Just do some research and you will find that it has caused alopecia (hair loss) in many women. In fact, for fine thin hair, I would tend to think that sew-ins could be a problem, not only for the hold, but because the wefts are hanging off the cornrows -- pulling on already fragile hair. Whereas, glue-ins or taped methods are installed at the root of the hair and grow out with the hair. The wefts tend to be equally placed on the head so they don't pull.
This is not to say I am against sew-ins. I think they are great, but they are not the answer for everybody and glue-ins are not the devil!
