I'm no doctor, but I would say that vitamins are very important when trying to grow healthy hair? If you're not healthy then chances are that your hair won't be in great condition either. But I'm not saying that you have to take vitamins to be healthy, I think it's just a good idea.

In my opinion, hair grows at a genetically predetermined rate that we cannot change. This rate slows down if we contract an illness or change our diet for the worse. The rate of hair growth is at its optimum when we are 100% healthy.

So, if you're courting a head of luscious long locks, it is necessary to be in good health. Are multivitamins essential? Only if you need them for your health, i.e. if you have been recommended to take them by a medical professional or if you currently have a low intake of certain vitamins due to health issues or just a pure dislike of healthy foods that are rich in goodness (I think I'll have to own up to that one!). I think that the relationship of vitamins and hair growth isn't really a direct one.

In short, I think I'm going to side with your friend, I'm afraid...

I will have to disagree with Cait. The average American diet is overnourished, in the sense of calories, but many of us are below normal in several vitamins and minerals, due to our intake of processed and junk foods.
Therefore, as the possessor of now past tailbone length hair, I would say vitamins are very necessary. The RDA is only the MINIMUM needed to keep illness away, NOT the maximum you can take. I personally take a multivitamin, a B complex with C, Flaxseed oil, Primrose oil, MSM, Biotin, Calcium and Juice Plus, a supplement recommended to my daughter by our doctor.
And before someone says consult your doctor, please know doctors for the most part, know very little about nutrition and vitamins. I am a nurse of twenty years experience and have heard what the majority of them say, and it is spouted from a book they studied twenty years ago in med school.
