QuoteReplyTopic: Dying hair to compliment skintone/faceshape. Help! Posted: August 24 2009 at 5:18pm
Ok, first off, HI!
Its been approximately ...6 years since I have had my hair professionally cut and colored. Its been black since 10th grade pretty much (and i'm nearing 22 now)and I'm sick of it.my hair looks good dark, but i want something different.
I was thinking of going like a medium brown with some chunky blonde highlights. But thats the safe route, and I want something new.
Bright vivid red reallllly intrigues and appeals to me, but i'm terrified.
here is a picture of me
sorry its somewhat angled thats the closest i could find to a strait on face pic with my hair down and still looking somewhat decent. My hair is about 3 or 4 inches longer than it is in that picture. also you can't tell but i'd say 75% of my hair is my natural hair color (which is a dark brown) and only the tips of my hair is black.
Now my questions, Can I pull off a VIVID red with my face shape and skin tone?
When I say vivid I mean like bright. here is the exact color I want
Or very similar.
Now assuming you all say that i CAN pull it off and it wont look like complete crap (and even if you say it WILL look like complete crap i will probably end up trying it anyways... lol) Can you tell me a brand/color that will match that red?
I will be stripping my hair first and most likely pre-lightening. If i don't need to pre-lighten please give me any tips i could use to get my hair that shade. Brands to use for developer/toner, stripper, lightener (if needed) and any other suggestions or tips would be extremely helpful. Even a good leave in conditioner to use on my hair for afterward would also be very helpful.
sorry this is so long but I've been beating myself up trying to decide (when you haven't done anything to your hair in over.... 2 years and its been 6 years since anything professional its a little scary diving right into something like this.)

Hello, I think L'Oreal HiColor Highlights in Magenta may come close. It's designed to be a single process hair color for women with brunette hair. The dye looks like theater blood and washes out a very intense red. :)
Here's a picture of the dye and of someone who used it:
Otherwise for a closer color match I would suggest manic panic hair colors though you will have to prelighten (bleach) first. It looks more intense than the Hicolor.
Edit: Also, I'm not sure if you could pull that color off if it's all over. The woman in the photo has the ice green eyes, which helps that flaming red work. I think a wine red or a bright red in highlights might work better on you - but it's up to you!

Your eyes are really pretty and would definitely suit red. I'd like to see a more yellow based red on you, rather than blue based, but I think it would be a hit!
You'll need to remove the black dye either way you go.

Any suggestions?
I'd also like to keep it looking somewhat natural. Not over the top. but at the same time not too tame. Just an inbetween. If thats possible. If not, then i'll have to go one way or another. (i'm a little picky, aren't i? hehe. sorry.) But I am definitely really interested in going with the red.
P.s. thanks for all the replies!
P.s.s. any suggestions on brands I should be using? I'm completely new when it comes to dying without using store bought box hair dyes.
I will be going to a beauty supply and buying all the materials there.
