Hello, I recently dyed my hair blonde (http://tinypic.com/r/adoun6/6 and http://tinypic.com/r/9an3wp/6 are what it looks like) and I'm considering going back to my original brown.  Since it costs about $40 to do this, I'm considering just doing it from a box.  My blonde hair was not bleached, it was colored, which makes me think it might be relatively easy to dye it brown again.  Does anyone have any suggestions?  This is my original brown that I want to get back to, or at least close to - http://tinypic.com/r/2hr1jlv/6 and http://tinypic.com/r/j5bga9/6. I want sort of an ash brown... I'm really fair so I'm thinking I can't have anything too brassy or golden.  Please let me know any suggestions you might have, as I've never done this before! Thanks :)

It can be risky from a box because you don't know what base is in the color (they don't write that info on the box). I'd use a violet based light brown dye (violet counters the yellow of blonde hair and gives a more ashy brown). If you buy colors in a box that say ash, they might be violet, sometimes they are, but sometimes they use green as the ash base, and this would give you hair that is greener than it is brown, thus you must be careful. If you want to try boxes, mix up a small amount of it and do a test strand to make sure it doesn't come out a crazy color. The dye at Sally or another beauty supply shop is way cheap, its about $5 or less per dye job, so its even cheaper than boxes if you find you're blowing through too many boxes that aren't giving a good test strand. The base is written on the dye at a beauty supply shop so you can get violet, and you'd want developer to go with that is 10 volume (since you want to go darker). I'd still test strand of course though.
