Hi,

I'm new, and hoping to get some advice/help/support. I have been growing my hair (old color) out for several months---it is well past my shoulders---it was returning to its natural color, which is a silvery color/with some dark brunette streaks left in it. I decided to stop coloring it after a long process of accepting that long, silvery hair could actually be pretty. Well, I thought I wanted to start coloring it again and went in yesterday and had it done, and then realized I had made a big mistake---so I lost all of that growing time, and I really want to have long hair that is my natural color---but it took so much to accept it as it grew out (colored a dark brunette color. I don't think there is anything I can do but let it grow again---don't think I could handle cutting it off at all---anyone been through something like this? Help? Comfort? Support? Ideas? Support for the idea of beautiful, long silvery hair would be greatly appreciated. WHY DID I DO IT ? Thank you very much.
Kathy

I was in the same situation. My hair is about 15% silver and I had been coloring it for five years. I decided to let it grow long and I have since stopped coloring. Every once in a while I look in the mirror and notice more gray and get the urge to color it again. Have you talked to your colorist about a process to remove the color? I don't know if it's possible, but it may be. Also--my gray hair will take permanant color for about two weeks, but then it starts to wash out. Is yours similar? When I accidentally dyed my hair black about 8 years ago a colorist suggested that I use Prell shampoo everyday. It's such a harsh shampoo that it will lift some of the color out. It worked to lighten the black in my hair to a dark brown--but it took several months. Just some ideas.

I have heard that Suave Daily Clarifying Shampoo will strip hair of its dyed color. It has some harsh ingredients too like ammonium lauryl sulfate. Or your stylist could try to remove the color. I had some color buildup from "temporary" products like Natural Instincts a few years ago and my stylist used something to get the buildup of color my hair. Good luck!

Thank you so much for the replies. You know, I had asked my hairstylist a long time ago about removing color, and she said it was pretty impossible to do and get back to your natural color. That is why I was just growing it out---plus anything you try to do, as I understand it, is hard on your hair. So I am thinking I need to just let it grow---I was crying over it last night---wish it wasn't such a big deal to me---I really want have long, natural colored hair---and I undid it in just one hair appointment. I actually had some complements on it when I was growing it out. But I was so scared it looked weird---because the contrast is pretty dramatic, and I'm not positively sure about long silvery hair looking good on me---but maybe I can start a whole new look? I really want to keep the length, and actually have it be even longer---but now it will just take forever---how long do you think it will take? Should I just get trims once in awhile, and eventually the color will be off (like years from now ---need a way to feel pretty through the process. Any other ideas or support would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much.

(((kathy))))! I've cried over my hair, too, which hubby doesn't understand since he's not a bit grey and gets buzzed down to skin every two weeks! I'm doing what Holly's doing; I'm taking a break from coloring for the summer at least until work starts up again. Then I'll see. I'm lucky to have that luxury. Anyway, I'm wearing a lot of scarves and bandannas tied under the nape of my neck. That keeps me a little cooler, my hair is out of my purse strap and seat belt, and besides, no one can tell the top is gray or I'm trying to put off a shampoo just one more day. It keeps it cleaner when I've just shampooed, too, and my ends aren't as dry, either. Coloring's too hard on my ends, and my hair is dark brunette and even though what's grey is pretty, it still visibly contrasts. I completely understood when Holly says the color only lasts a couple of weeks before it goes away. I upgraded from semi to permanent color, and even the more caustic permanent color doesn't stick. So I'm getting off the treadmill for awhile. It's really funny you should mention that you need inspiration for long silver hair; yesterday I posted on another thread that the inspiration for long hair came from one of my professors. She wears her silver hair down to her waist, and it's beautiful!

Kathy,

Approximately how much gray do you have? What is your natural color? Last time I dyed my hair to cover the gray I used a dye that was one shade too light. It looked horrible. I waited 2-3 months so I had enough growth for my friend (who is a color expert) to match. It took several hours, but she actually matched my natural color exactly. I only have about 10%-15% gray, and as the dyed part grew the gray came through again, but it looks more natural. I have about 6 inches of hair that has gray strands, and the rest matches my natural brown. Also--another thing you might want to look into is coloring with henna. It's a plant protien that coats the hair shaft. The advantage is that it doesn't harm your hair, and it results in a tinted look on gray that actually looks pretty good. The disadvantage is that sometimes it makes your hair look greasy and heavy, and it can be messy. Also, you can't color your hair chemically after you use henna, well you can, but it makes the results of chemical coloring unpredictable. I buy "Light Mountain" brand, it's usually available at health food stores. I've always had really good results with henna. It makes my hair feel fuller and really makes it shine.
