I don't like salons. I've had too many bad experiences with stylists who argue with me or don't do what I say, so whenever possible I'd rather go it alone. Really I only go to the salon if the style I want is too complicated to do by myself :-P . I do all kinds of ill-advised things on my own, don't I? *laughs*

Every 2-3 weeks I go for a bang trim. When I kept my hair shoulder length, I would get a trim every 1½ months or so. Now that I'm letting it grow, I probably won't get a trim for about 6 months.
I haven't had a haircut since May. But I did have my bangs trimmed about 2-3 months ago. I'm gonna go as long as I can without going to the salon. But once it gets really uneven at the back, I'll go in for a trim just to get the ends evened up into a blunt edge. And I've decided to let my bangs grow out so I won't even have to go for bang trims in between.

I haven't been to a salon in about 3 years. One of my friends is a licensed cosmetologist and she trims the ends maybe once a year; otherwise I have also let trusted friends trim the ends occasionally.

Ok question, for average healthy hair, how much split/dead ends should be getting cut off at a time, ie every six months. I am trying to baby my hair but was just wondering what was normal.
Loiving a good life is not regretting it at 60.

Hi Breece,
You only "need" to trim off what is damaged... or uneven (if you're going for the neat-line aesthetic). You could conceivably trim 1/2" or even as little as 1/4" if trimming once every six months.

Now that I'm growing my hair out, the last time I went was three months ago just for a little trim..and, thankfully, the stylist listened! I didn't end up chopped! But, If I could go just for the experience of having someone else wash my hair and nothing else, I'd be happy! And, I wish I could just go and sit in one and watch the befores and afters. I love that!
Life is wonderful...when you have a cat. But even better when you have a cat and good hair!

In an ideal world I would get it trimmed every 6-8 weeks and highlighted about 4 times a year, but it is so spendy! I love my hairstylist, she is great! I have long hair so it is fairly maintenance free in the cutting department, if I had a short style I would have to get it cut much more often, as it grows pretty fast. It depends on the person and the hairstyle.
