How do I get my hair to be a lighter color?

    am male, relaxed hair, sits right on my shoulder, dark brown.
I notice that in the sunlight, my hair has a slightly audubrn hue to the color.  I want my hair color to be visible but not austentacious to the sight.  My hair looks black and I really want to dye it brighter or something along those lines without looking funny.

Any help as to know how to pick the right color? What not to do?
