How to get hair into without using too much style products?

   Helle everybody!

Allright the problem is actually my boyfriend. After a shower his hair get's very dry and jejune and kinda fluffs up. If his hair is longer than let's say 1 1/2 inch it starts looking like a bale of straw but usually he wears shorter her (slightly shorter than 1 inch to be exact). 

The problem is that he uses a lot of hair gel to get his hair into shap. I even tried to do his hair, but wasn't successful either, but when I see celebrities like Eric Szmanda - he has longer hair (http://imdb.com/name/nm0844172/) or Justin Timberlake with his short hair cut it looks like they don't use any products at all.

How do they achieve a great hair style without greasy and clammy hair?

Can anyone give me a tipp what I can do to help him?
